the .30 American
« on: December 24, 2004, 06:46:17 PM »
Colleagues: ‘bout 15 yrs. ago Federal Cartridge Comp. made a limited production run of .30-30 brass w/ a small primer pocket, & called it the “.30 American “.

Unfortunately, I’ve been trying unsuccessfully to find 10-20 rounds or so to experiment w/.

Perchance, does anyone here have some of this brass (new) that would  be willing to sell?

Ray, were you able to find any of this brass?

I remember reading in "Precision Shooting" when this brass first came out.  Maybe you might have better luck asking on some of the benchrest bulletin boards.

Also, there are 2 other avenues you could take.  Rocky Mountain Cartridge (I think that's their name) in Cody, Wyoming, can make up this brass for you, with whatever size primer pocket you want.  This brass will be lathe-turned, and may be expensive (like $2 or $3 per piece), but if you only want 20 rounds to experiment with it may be worthwhile.

Also, there is an outfit in western Wyoming (I think it's Freedom Arms?) that sells primer pocket inserts which enable you to use a small rifle primer in a large primer pocket.  They sell for around $17 per 100.  I think they were originally made so that shooters could use SR primers in the 45 Colt.

Ray,

How to make .30 American type brass.........

About three years ago I ordered Primer Hole Reducers from:

Wayne Baker
Tin Cup
P.O. Box 110
Freedom, Wy 83120
(208) 873-2632

From what I remember these stainless steel Primer Hole Reducers were originally used in the early .454 Casull cases.

Cost was $17.00 per hundred.

Upon receipt an even dozen new R-P, .45-70, cases were equipped with the Primer Hole Reducers.

Sadly, this project along with many other "I'm agonna" projects just never seem to get accomplished.

Might add that somewhere in the accumulation there is a single box of 20 new .30 American cases, put away for posterity.
