Can anyone tell me if using straight skunk essence would be a good lure for mink in cubbie sets? I'm planning on using those newspaper tubes and 120's. I have some good mink bait I made with fish and mink glands, but figured the skunk essence would really reach out in the cold weather. Plus be a good change up from fish. Worm

Worm, ive never used skunk on mink in cold weather... i just use pure mink glands mixed with glycol. It works fine for me... You can use either fresh fish or tainted a bit... i find the mink will still check out tainted fish and the smell reaches out further than fresh fish in 0 degree weather...

I basically agree with RdFx. However, skunk musk can be used to attract mink if it isn't over done, just enough added to the lure or bait so one can still smell the mink musk and other ingredients. Most animals are somewhat at least attracted to the musks of other animals. Ace :grin:

Thanks for the info. I planned on just using the skunk near the set to draw it close to the cubbie. Than having the fish/mink glands to lure it through the 120. Thanks again for the info. Worm

Going back through my journals, blind sets were my top producers (no bait or lure) but those sets that I did have baited or lured produced in this order: 1.) mink gland lure, 2.) red fox urine, 3.) bloody muskrat carcass and mink gland lure combo.
I did try some light skunk essence a couple of seasons awhile back, thinking heck they have a relatively similar genial background in the species. I honestly was not impressed with the results.

After Christmas the mink gland really starts to shine. I've used Lenon's #3 and have very positive results in pockets that had seemingly gone dead. Whether its the deep snow forcing the bank runners into the drink, or the seasonal transition that puts the big bucks on the move I don't know, but either way the gland lure seems to do the trick. I also use the gland lure in conjunction with fresh muskrat sometimes, but don't know if it really helps. I think the mink should be on its way down the drowner before it sees any of the offerings at the back of the pocket anyway. I also find the mink gland to be fairly attractive to those late season coons, and even more so than the fishy type attractants I use so heavily before den up.
