Got a Marlin for Christmas
« on: December 25, 2004, 04:17:30 PM »
I was lucky enough to receive a stainless steel Marlin model 60 .22LR as a Christmas gift from my brother.  Nice looking little gun (and my first Marlin firearm).  I didn't even know it had a laiminated stock until I was looking at the specs on the website and noticed that it had walnut finished laminate.  Definately looks better than my other .22LR (a Ruger 10/22).  Haven't really had a chance to shoot it yet, but I thought I'm come here and gloat  .

I picked up the same rifle as a happy birthday to me present a couple weeks ago and I agree. It is surprisingly well finished.

I still haven't had a chance to shoot it yet though do to working through the holidays and such.  I can't wait to get her to a range or if I have to a friendly farmers field somewhere to get her zeroed in and find out how she shoots.

It looks 100 times nicer than my Winchester 190 I have in the cabinet that this one is replacing.

I will be able top later this week. I still haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet to get it zeroed in or anything.

Been so busy with work and the holidays around here all I have had time to do is get a cheap BSA vaiable power scop mounted on it and I put some sounds in it and manually worked the action to make sure it fed and ejected properly a couple of times and to loosen up the action a bit.

I can say that it is considerably lighter than my Winchester 190 I have.

It also seems much better balanced and comfortable to me.  That was why I picked this one up to be honest.

Once I get it to the range I will write up a little mini range report on how it does.

Still haven't really shot mine for accuracy yet.  I shot one tube full at my backstop just to make sure it cycles correctly.  Worked fine so far, and from a purely visual inspection I've got nothing but praise for it.  Only thing is I might end up waiting until I get a new scope for it before I zero it in.

I went to Wally World and picked up one of the laser Boresighters today and boresighted mine.  I will hopefully get to take it to the range or out into a friendly farmers field sometime in the next week or so.

Darn holidays have kept me from going shooting for over a month now, I am starting to get twitchy.

Ok As promised here is the report on how this little gun shot today at the range.

I fired about 70 rounds through it today at the range.  All of them CCI Mini Mag Hollow Points.

First off not one failure to feed, fire or eject.  Operation was smooth as silk.

Second.  Once I got it zeroed in it was shooting 1 inch patterns at 25 yards without really trying hard.

I was just making sure it was going where I wanted it to ge and it was shooting this small without any precise aiming involved.  I have no doubt that this gun could shoot tiny patterns if I really applied myself and did my part.

I pur a BSA 3-7 x 10 scope on it and I was using the 7x magnification for most of this so I could see where my shots were hitting while zeroing in the scope.

After this I had some fun playing with another new (to me) gun.  A Ruger Mark I with a 6 inch tapered barrel.  I fired probably 100 rounds or more through it just playing around and it shoots really nice as well.  I am by no means a long range pistol shooter though. I did good to hit the paper at 25 yards.

All in all I love my new Marlin and I cant wait to get it out and do some more shooting really soon.

Speed-Loaders

Congrats on the new M60s yall, I love mine. Anyway, you can make your own speed-loaders if ya want. I really didnt want to mess around with ordering one from Cabela's, so I made mine. I took a basic arrow from Wally-World, cutt off the end about 2-3inches, and then put the shells in bullet first. Then all you do is get a regular pencil and cut of about 3 inches, and plug the end of the arrow. Mine holds around 28-29 rounds of LR. Its that simple. Just make sure that your plug is in good, and that you put the shells in BULLET first. :-)

It really wasnt my idea. Someone over on RmfireCentral posted that they used an arrow for a speedloader, and I tried it, and it worked, so I have been "promoting" the Tubular-Rim-Fire Arrow Speedloader, lol :)

It's good to see that all of you like your model 60s. For some reason this gun gets a bad rap from a lot of people. I have had several over the years and never had any of them give me any trouble as long as you kept the action reasonably clean and lightly oiled. Also it seems they have all been fairly accurate. The one I have for now seems to like the Remington and Federal bulk packs the best but both seem to be very dirty. The model 60, got to love them or hate them. :D

My little 60 seems to love CCI Mini Mags a lot.

My plan as of right now is to shoot them exclusively in it until the shooting characteristics change.

I really need to get to some place with a 100 yard range to see how it shoots at longer ranges.  I hate only having local ranges that are 25 yard indoor ranges.

My little Model 60 with it's BSA 3-7x10 scope on it seems pretty darn accurate for such a "cheap" little gun.  Well I wouldn't call 175.00 out the door at Wally World really cheap.  But for what I paid for it it is a surprisingly good shooter.

My only complaint about it is the cheesy front sight shroud that falls off if you look at it wrong.  Most likely that will be added to my misc. parts box before long if it doesn't just get lost while shooting.

Mine has the plastic reddish orange front sight that appears to just sit in a channel in the front sight mount.  Anyone know if you can order replacements for those from Marlin or some other place online?  It looks like it could get knocked out pretty easily if the front sight were to snag on something.
