Just ordered me a 23'' 45-70 barrel for my G2 from Ed, and was wanting some input on what type of glass I should top it off with. I know I don't need anything real powerful but I don't want anything to weak either. All input will be welcome. I am new at this big bore game and want to do it correct the first time.

4X is plenty to take advantage of the range capability of the round in a hunting situation. If long range target practice is the goal then anything you think is warranted. But for hunting nothing more is needed. If a variable then a low power one like 1.5-5 or so is plenty.

Thanks for the reply, what are your thoughts on brand? The local gun shop says I can't go wrong with a leopold. I know he is correct but the $$$is more than I want to spend at this time. Any good lower end glass come to mind?

I'd suggest Bushnell. The Elite 3200 is excellent and well under Leupold prices for an even better scope for the most part. If that's still too much money for you look at the Trophy line. I've tested the full Bushnell line on my guns and have complete confidence in each as a great buy within their respective price ranges. Always buy as much scope as you can but don't feel required to buy top of line if it's just more than you can afford.

Nothing wrong with the Leupold scopes and I do have them on some of my guns too. But they are kinda pricy for sure. Especially now that they tell retailers what price to charge rather than letting the free market decide price. Not very American of them if you ask me.

Bushnell sounds like the one. Thanks for the help. Now I need to decide which round for the ferrel hogs.

You can get an undered powered scope for a .45-70. I would recomand a 2 1/2X Leupold. That`s the scope I use on my muzzle loader, my 7.62 x 39 and my .411 Hawk. I don`t think that you can beat Leupold for the money.

Quite a few of us here would disagree with that. Good scopes but not for the money charged. Both better scopes out there and cheaper scopes that are just as good. Leupold's recent pricing policies make no sense.

I had a LEupold VXIII 1.5-5x20 on my encore barrel for a while but after having my barrel cut down to 18" I opted for the williams WGRS peep sight. I really like the Peep for the handling and blance of the short barrel without the extra bulk of the scope. THe peep is great for shots out to 150 yards or so and thats the intended use of my encore barrel anyway. Burris also makes a really nice low powered scope thats worth looking into.

Well I went with the Leupold rifleman 3-9x40. I got it from SWFT fro $16 over $200 it should be here later this week with the barrel. Thanks for all the input guys.

Say WHAT? Where in the world did that come from? I thought you were set on buying a Bushnell that is a far better scope for less money. Then you not only change to the lesser quality Leupold but pay too much for it too boot? Oh well it's your money. You could have gotten it cheaper from either one of three of the GBO advertisers here. And the Rifleman is not nearly the scope the lower priced Elite 3200 is.

I did get it from a site advertiser SWFA. The Elite was just a buck cheaper than the rifleman. No questions asked lifetime warranty swayed me to the Leupold.

"made in America" leads me towards the leupold too. Burris and leupold are my favorites scopes, I had a Elite 4200, it was a nice scope too, but having that "made in america" sticker makes me feel better than the "made in japan".

A word of warning. Watch out for Weatherby eyebrow. The rifleman should have enough eye relief but be careful the first time. I put a Simmons Aetec on mine as it has five inches of eye relief. More than just about anything else out there and they stand up to mucho recoil very well.
