i was looking through NEF's catalog and it says the handi rifle weighs 7 lbs, and the synthetic handi rifle weighs 7 lbs. How can this be true? the polymer thier synthetic stocks are made from has to be lighter than solid hardwood?

SSS:

Not really...they can have the synthetics made to weight what they want them to...they just remove a certin amount to decrease the weight some...I thought it might be a denser wood they were using...but I just proved it to myself that's not the reason... by weighing one of the newer laminated forearms one with my Ultra's cinnamon laminated one...the newer one weighs 5-7/8 oz.   and my Ultra's cinnamon laminated one weighs 5-1/2oz...so..that's not the reason for sure...

Advertised weights are probably rounded, not necessarily precise. If all H&R bull barrels have the same outside measurement and contours, there's no way a .45-70 and a .223 could weigh the same and I don't believe H&R makes all rifles weight the same by changing the stock weight to make them weight the same 7lbs. Some are going to weight 6.5lbs and some are going to weight 7.5lbs, so they pick 7lbs as an average. I'll be weighing some of mine today with a digital fish scale, forgot I had it!

Most H&R synthetic stocked guns have a steel bar added to the stock for weight. I removed 14 1/2 oz of steel and closed cell foam from the stock of my 280 rem. Handi rifle and a like size piece of steel from my 308 and did not weight it.
