Can a 308 win be converted to 35 rem
« on: December 27, 2004, 10:37:54 AM »
Have a model 700 remington in 308 win. Wanted to have it rebarreled to 35 rem. Question is what else has to be done to the bolt and action to make it work. What would be a good twist rate. Thanks

My response is a question.  Why?  The 308 is superior in every way to the 35 rem.  If you want bigger cal go 358 Win or 35 Whelan.

Short answer is I think nothing but a rebarrel and chamber job should be required. I think case heads are close enough it should work with no bolt modification. But it would be better to go to the .358 Win with precisely the same bolt face and all other dimensions but bore diameter. Then load it to .35 Rem. levels if you wish or to full .358 Win. performance or anywhere in between. Whelen is long action and not possible on this rifle.

The guys were right.  A new barrel and the 35 Rem would work just fine but a 358 would be better.  It would also take the rebarrel but would result in a much more saleable gun and a lot more versatile...
