Never thought I'd see the day ;)
"If Ruger did them all as well as they did this one I'd be a lot more likely to totally get off their case. Surprised But since getting this one I have several times actually suggested Rugers to folks and yeah over the Taurus....."---A Graybeard quote.

Know you had a bad history with Rugers, but always thought you were unflexable on your opinions of them.

Yes, their quality has waivered from time to time,( which could apply to most gun manufacures)...
but was always bothered from your generalized opinion of  them, because I have had so much good luck with Ruger guns.

2 in particular,, My 6" GP100 put it's first cylinder in a 1 1/2" group at 25 yards(4 out of six touching), and my SuperRedhawk ,at 50 yards, gave me the best group out of any handgun I ever owned(excluding,of course, my TC Contender).

I'm sure I got lucky with the guns I bought,but.........
It always bothered me to see someone whose opinion I respected as much as yours, seem to write off ALL RUGERS.

Understand, this post is not me pushing Rugers, it's just my way of saying it's nice to know your opinions aren't caste in stone :)

P.S.---Don't pay attention to my post count, been around for years ;)

Nope as much as folks generally assume my opinions are cast in stone they really aren't. Well most of them aren't anyway.  :)

I've owned a fairly large number of Ruger guns and continue to buy them from time to time to see if there is a reason to continue or discontinue my opinions of them. Matter of fact I have one on the way to Bama from Texas now. An older model 77 with tang safety in 6 MM Remington. Since Remington won't chamber it in a sporter weight gun for me I've tried the Rugers. This is my second Ruger in it. The first being a #1B that had to be the sorriest excuse for a rifle I've ever owned. Well not counting an imported Sharps clone that is.

My positions on guns change as my experience dictates. A long string of good experiences causes me to say nice things about them. A long string of bad experiences causes me to say bad things. Simple as that. I just call them as I see them. I have owned upwards of 300-400 guns. Long ago lost count but even back then well over 20 years ago when I quit keeping a log it had exceeded 200 and I've actually bought at an increasing rate since. I buy them or trade for them and try them. Keep a few and use the rest for trade material. The actual number I own at any given time remains fairly constant but fluctuates as to what is here. So I've gained a lot of experience with a lot of different guns to base my opinions on.

:-D Ahaaa.come on GB, even Remingtom made a few that should have been marketed as fence post.  I'll never forget the first model 742 I bought, pure trash.  But sadly, I made the mistake of buying another one a few years later, same story, trash.  I traded that one and a couple of hundred for a 25-06 Sako.  Now, I have owned a couple of good Remingtons and have also owned a couple of good Rugers.

Bottomline, guns are like anything else, some are just not made or do not perform as well as others, you can get a "lemon" in any market.

I have owned perhaps 3-4, maybe 5 of the Remington 742s. Been asscoiated with several more owned by hunting partners. Never seen a problem with one yet. In fact one of mine a carbine is still in use every season by my cousin who bought it from me at least 25 years ago. Now the guns they replaced the 742 with I've heard have a LOT of problems but I've never owned any of them. The original 740s and 742s have proven very dependable for a lot of southern deer hunters. You'll see them in common use still all over the south.

not to steal the subject line, but i've had a two 742's and one 7400, in both .30-06 and .270 and they were awesome rifles.  i'm not sure why i got rid of them, just wanted something different at the moment i guess.  i've always wanted one in .308 or .243, but i've never found one while i've had cash in my pocket.  the 7400 .270 wasnt as accurate as the 742's in .30-06 were, but it was still easily minute-of-whitetail...

Chris,

If you really would like to have a 742 in .308, I have one that I picked up on a trade for a canoe some years back.  I really don't have any use for it as it doesn't really fit the type of hunting I do here.  I don't think I have ever fired it.  So if you would like to trade it for something I can use, send me an e-mail.

I have talked to several other people who say they have had good luck with the 742, buy my problem with both guns,  was I couldn't get them to group tighter than 6-8 inches at 100 yards.  Both were 30-06, had good mounts and good scopes on them and I tried them with several different reloads, and factory loads. I acquired both used in trades.  With the exception of several military surp automatics the best results I ever had with a auto rifle was with a model 100 Winchester .308.  You could shoot 1-1 1/2 inch groups all day long with that gun.  I traded it for a model 70 in .300 mag.  Now that's a hammering josa, I don't think it's been out of the safe in 20 years.
