Hello  Welcome to the site :D
On H&R - Nef center fire rails I use Loupold High Rings ( for
Weaver stile base) pick them up at Wally World for about $16
a set. Work very well for me. Marv.

Trapperz, are you asking about the 5" or 6" long "scope rail" that screws onto the barrel over the chamber area with 3 small screws or the "scope rings" that mount onto that rail?....<><....

You need weaver style  scope rings for the nef/H&R mount. I use Weaver rings mostly and have had no problems.

That 5" long black thing is the scope rail. The Simmons rings will work if they are for a centerfire size Weaver style mount. Try one on the rail without the scope to see if and how it fits and to familiarize yourself on how it attaches. The centerfire rings have a larger distance between the gripping sufaces at the attachment area. The scope rail takes any "Weaver" style scope rings. To mount a scope on a Handi or Sportster and depending on the size of the ocular and objective lenses you may need at least "medium" or "high" rings. The regular height rings are just to short to allow for mounting or hammer clearance unless the scope has a lot of eye relief and is mounted ahead of the hammer as some shotgun scopes and all Red Dot sights are. I have some Simmons scope rings and think yours are "Weaver" style rings, the only question is if they are rimfire or centerfire rings and if they are high enough to mount the scope you are going to use. Weaver style rings are by far the most prevalent and popular style out there, it's not the manufacturer but the style that is important to you right now, yours might fit. I just changed a scope last night and used an old set of weavers I had lying around and they worked and fit great. And, since were talking about it I'm going to bore sight that gun right now!!! I'll remove the barrel from the frame, put it on a cardboard box (with notches cut in it's sides) on the kitchen table and bore sight on the center of the wreath hanging on my neighbors door across the street!!!....<><....

If it's a 1" tube Deerfield, it will fit 1" weaver style rings.

be sure you get at least the "medium" height rings. If you can get back to Wal-Mart easily I suggest you get both the medium and high rings and bring back the ones you don't use. Also, even though I personally use Millet Angle Locs, between the Weavers, which are a good ring, and the Leupold, I might get the Leupold, if the price difference was not to much....<><....

Dry firing a Handi even once can result in a broken firing pin, I wouldn't recommend it at all unless you use a snapcap or fired brass in the chamber.

Thanks for the info quickdtoo.

Do you know if it's just because the pin will strike the chamber? If so can it be dry fired when the barrel is broken?

I see why so many of the plastic stocks get swapped for wood too. It's not the nicest stuff I've ever felt on a rifle.

I think they break cuz the pin comes to an abrupt stop at the end of its travel instead of hitting a primer.  The firing pin is in the center of the bore so it would make no difference whether the action was open or closed, unless there is something to cushion the firing pin like a cartridge or a snapcap.

Missed the Sportster statement....thought this was the NEF/H&R centerfire forum, guess I'm in the wrong forum! A rimfire isn't good to dry fire either as the firing pin slams into the barrel which will also damage the pin. The barrel is much harder material than the brass case so there is no cushion affect.

;) np quickdtoo

now back on topic...

has anyone found difficulty in getting the scope positioned back far enough with the "wide" mounts like the Weaver QD rings? It looks like the Burris Sigs are narrower and allow the scope to be positioned closer to the eye.

Maybe I just need to get used to the new stock shape... :?

That's one more good reason to use the Burris Signature rings! If Midsouth ever gets the mediums in we'll have a good source at a good price....Mediums work most of the time, it just depends on the size of the power ring on the scope, usually.
