slug gun scope mount
« on: December 28, 2004, 05:04:48 PM »
Thanks to all that answered my request for a slug gun scope recommendation.  I ended up getting a Simmons 1.5x5x32 w/ the lighted reticle.  I was in the local Gylans today and just my luck they had one marked down 50% to $60.  Wasn't looking for the lighted model but it looked like a nice thing to have.  I will be mounting it on a Mossberg 500 20 gauge with a rifled barrel that has ramp sights on it.  I have no idea what kind of mount/rings I will need.  It is drilled and tapped for a Weaver style rail. With the rear mounted safety and the large diameter of the scope, I think that it will need to be fairly high. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  TIA

P.S. any ideas where to start with slug selection?

I would try to keep the scope as low as possible. With Weaver rings, you should be able to find a gun shop that will let you try low, medium, and high rings. The lower the scope, the closer you can keep the gun to your cheek, and the less "face slap" you will get when you shoot.
I don't have any hot info on 20 gauge slugs, but two slugs that I have seen most all 12 gauges shoot accurately are the Winchester Platinum Tips and the Lightfield Hybreds.

I have the same gun Mossy 500 20 gauge and have been trying to figure out which mount it used for a while now also. After a lot of research the best I could come up with was this Weaver mount I found at Cheaperthandirt. I ordered it last night I hope it works, it says Fits: Mossberg Models 500 (1997 and after), 590, .835 Shotguns & 835. It doesn't say 12 or 20 gauge I'm hoping they are the same. I'll let you know in a few days if you can wait.

Follow up. I received the mount today and it fits fine. Now I have to figure out what scope I want to mount. I have a Tasco Bantam fixed power shotgun scope with circle x crosshairs in the cabinet and a Bushnell 1x30 Trophy red dot with 4 different recticles.
I'll probably mount the red dot and give it a try first but I'll take the bushnell with me to the range just incase I don't like it.

Mine's on the receiver with a Weaver rail. I found some Burris high rings 1/2 off @ Gaylans today. The height allows me to get to the safety just fine. They were out of Matt black ones. So I went with the nickle ones. I thought the contrast might look nice. I must say I wasn't impressed with the Burris rings at all. I ussually use Millets. You can see by the pic that when I tightened them down the plating just pelled off in the thin part of the ring. I sure thought they looked thin in that area.   Although it's a little tough to get it back on safe. Another problem that I had was that the reticle in the Simmons looks to be cocked 5 to 10 degrees from being in line with the turrets. In order to get the crosshairs level in looks like the scope is sitting in the rings cocked! I guess I'll have to send that to Simmons since I picked it up at Gaylans 1/2 price also. I was looking at the warrenty card that came with it and it said to send it prepaid along with a check for $10.00 for return shipping...... I  DON'T THINK SO .... the thing is brand new. I'm just glad that I am anal about getting ready for deer season and I'm getting a new gun setup now instead of October!!
