Anyone shooting this in yer TC (contender or encore)? If so, what length of barrel/twist rate, etc. do you recommend?

Also, what about ballistic information? I hear all the time about folks taking deer with an SKS.

Thanks,
Rob

Try the 30 Herrett. It's nearly identical to the 7.63x39. Especially in a T/C Contender.

I have a 10 inch SSK stainless barrel with a .311 bore and a friend of mine has a rechambered factory 30 carbine with the 308 bore.  He is very happy with his and I think mine is one of my best barrels, as long as you accept JDJones instructions that come with the barrel:  NEVER EVER EVEN ONCE FIRE FOREIGN OR SURPLUS AMMO IN A CONTENDER.  But it goes on to say that US made or ammo with load data taken from a modern US reloading data is completely safe.  I have fired winchester, remington and federal ammo from my barrel with very good results but I reload it mostly for it.  I use .311 bullets and find it to be a very accurate round.  Brass is avialable for free if you pick it up on most ranges.  I actually use 30 herret data to reload with...if you think that's crazy, run a 30-30 shell into a 7.62x39 die and then compare with a herrett...other than the shoulder angle, they are nearly identical...and I know the Herrett data keeps me below 45,000 pressure units.  Don't go near anything with steel cases!
As some above have said, not much better than 30-30, but something different to play with.  Hey, If JDJones will sell it, it has to be safe...and hey, the  guy advertises here so don't be afraid to give him some business!

 good luck and regards,

I have a 26" encore in 7.62x39 shoots great ..less then a inch at 100yards there is hunting rounds for it and run about 6$ cheeper then 30-06...The twist on mine is what ever Fox ridge custom shop has for a standard twist also it's a 308 bore...and yes not much better then a 30-30 but how many deer have been taken with 30-30.. But don't buy it for the use of the cheep military surplus wont work in it..And  I am glad it did not because I did not know until this post that the military stuff is all a 311 bullet..
I have yet been able to shoot a 3 shot sub 1" group at 100 yards ...........on any deer!!!!!!

Is this .311 true for all 30 cal surplus rounds, or just the 7.62x39?  I have a .308 barrel.

Guess I'll just take it to a gunsmith and ask.

.311 is the standard bore size for the round and what all mil. rifles are bore sized at, or alittle more for safty.

I have a Ruger Mini-30 and a Ruger Model 77 - both in caliber 7.62x39.  Both rifles have .308 bores but Ruger has a "tapered swage" in front of the chamber that swages the bullet from .311 to .308. Commercial .308 or military .311 ammo both work fine.
