Why should I get the octagon bbl?
« on: December 29, 2004, 08:12:17 AM »
Is the octagon bbl just a nostalgic cowboy action revival thing or are there reasons I should get on board and get an octogon bbl lever gun?

Lifted an oct. bbl Marlin and it seemed pretty heavy but the bbl was also long--what wt do you think the oct. adds? Any reason not to carry one in the field?

The octagon barrel is just for looks.  Practically speaking, they can actually be detrimental to accuracy.  It is harder to make an octagon barrel concentric to the bore.  That means the barrel walls may be a different thickness, one side to the other.  In rapid fire, the barrel heats up and expands unevenly, throwing the shots to a different point.
That's also why target shotguns have "floating ribs".
