Handi-rifle meet and/p'dog shoot
« on: December 29, 2004, 09:50:30 AM »
Howdy all, just want to run this up the flagpole and see who salutes.

Would there be any interest in a p'dog shoot and meet and greet for Handi-holics?

Just for the record, I'm not a planner/organizer. I just thought it would be fun. Just Handi/Sportsters and a dog town. I've never been p'doggin' but it sounds like fun. Recent issue of Varmint Hunters magazine has an article with a guy that makes the 500 yard club with his Handi in .223. (issue #51 July '04)

Montana early June? South Dakota? Like I said, I'm not a planner and have no p'doggin' experience.

Anyone want to run with this idea?

Sidenote, I could have t-shirts made, my brother is friends with a screenprinter.

I'd love to do that but that is quite along way for me to drive. If it was closer i would be all over it like white on rice. But like i said just too far for me to drive.

I'm in, I use a .223 and a 22 hornet Handi rifle. In SD, where I shot them the softer the report the more shooting we get. Maybe the towns just get shot to often. In any event it is always fun to shoot.

AS far as travel, all we have to do is decide to go.

Ok, so far we have one vote for Ohio one for South Dakota and three (including mine) for Montana.

I'm still all for Montana. South Dakota is closer for me as is Ohio. But I kind of had my heart set on the Big Sky country.

When is up for debate. I was thinking first week of June. Input here is needed. My vacation request for 2005 is due today to get dibs. Not gonna happen.

Where in Montana? Locals, this is where you come in. Not expecting anyone to divulge their hotspots. Just wanna get into some dogs. This is a social event as well. Cheap and clean hotels nearby, food etc... I wouldn't mind camping a bit, tent and sleeping bag suit me fine. But a hot shower and soft bed after hittin' the dogs all day has it's appeal.

Any other input is very welcome. Like I said earlier, I'm not a planner. If we can get this deal together it can only happen with help from some others. Suggestions and helpful critisism are welcome.

Kind of reminds me of the Great Shawnee Squirrel Hunt from the old Marlin board. Lets see if we can make it happen.

Graybeard, you take a dog 150+ yards with your open sighted 30-30 and the steak is on me.

I'll bring plenty of cheese for snacks but I need help with basic logistics.

MtJerry, can you help me with this? Maybe mattparliament can lend a hand? Montanan, you see this?

C'mon guys, lets have some fun. Meet and Greet and p'doggin' with fellow Handi-holics. Hang-out, see some sights, shoot some dogs, get some fine western beef....

I'll be downloading buttloads of maps this weekend, I have a GPS. I have guns and ammo, I need other shooters to have fun with.

Low key, cheap fun, what more can you ask?

I know Montana is a drive for most but maybe Shaner will organize a Central area hunt for Handi-holics in Ohio....

If we get five guys to commit and show up, I'll buy the hats. Longest confirmed kill gets a gift box from the cheese house of my choice. There, I said it. Prizes.

Lookin' forward to your input.

FWIW, if Shaner gets a meet&greet/ varmint shoot in Ohio going as well, I'll kick in a gift box of cheese to the longest confirmed kill there as well.

Perhaps I should invest in a rangefinder if I'm gonna kick out prizes for longest kills...

Hey Hildy, bring out that bad%$@ 25-06 and show us how it's done.
Jeff223, I know from your postal match wins you could be a contender for the cheese box.
How about you .204 Ruger owners, you in? Let's see those new guns shine...

OK, the above was just a bit of trash talk to get people interested in this thing, no offense intended.

If you guys firm it up I wouldn't mind going if I can arrange it. I've never even seen a PD much less shot one of the little suckers. Will depend on several things really. If I could meet up with someone not so terribly far from here and go on the rest of what that would really help me. Long drives really work on me. Got a new 2005 Toyota Tundra with cap over the bed for the trip but could sure use some driving help between here and there. Seems like someone in TN commented. Someone from there would be ideal as that's not so far off to go and have them join up and share driving duties.

Would be nice to meet some of you guys to post so much here too.

At this time I really don't even have a suitable gun for shooting PDs unless the new to me old model 77 Ruger in 6MM Rem. works out. Just got it from a dealer in TX and haven't even scoped it yet. But that ain't no biggie cuz I'm on real good terms with my local gunshop guy, bet he'd be happy to fix me up with another varmint rifle. He's only sold me about 10-12 in the past and I've traded them all back in after playing with them awhile. I do that to guns in general like you guys do handi's.

I'll do what I can to help make this happen.

I would suggest that we pick a date first - then work from there.  logistics work out easier if we have a date first.  You can shoot PD's most all year long, but driving conditions in this part of the country can be iffy up into end of May and sometimes early June.

tI would suggest mid to the end of June.

Graybeard - 6mm will work great.  Find a SMALL, FAST bullet that will give you MOA accuracy out to 100 yrds and you will have LOTS of fun  8)

How many shots do I get to hit one?

Out to 100 yards I have rimfires to do the job. Maybe even a bit beyond. Those that get you in the 500 yard or 1000 yard club are where I need help.    Probably from someone shooting for me.  :-D

If I can work it out to come I'll pick up another varmint rifle and scope. Not a problem. Heck my R700 LSS Mtn. Rifle in 7-08 is accurate enough but I'd not want to be shooting it as many times as ya usually do on PDs. A .223 or .204 Ruger rifle is on my list to pick up before August anyway. I'm heading to PA in August for some groundhogs and maybe crows if we get the chance. Figured I'd pick me up a .223 or .204 for that trip.

Graybeard, 30-30, 150+yards your steak is on me, as many shots as it takes.

MtJerry, my first thought was the first week of June but I'll defer to your experience. Later in June is better? 2nd, 3rd week? You mentioned driving conditions, I assume you mean in the fields?

I'm single with 18 days of vacation to schedule, after today it's first come first served for scheduling vacation days. I could leave Waukesha on a Friday afternoon, slow ride to Montana. Arrive Sunday night. Shoot and mess around for 3 days then return.
Just an idea what might work for me. Others, please add your comments including ridesharing info and date ideas. June seems like a starting point. Mtjerry might be able to provide a better idea of when this should go down.

Thanks to all for ideas and comments.

Graybeard,

I go shooting p-dogs 4 times a year in SD.  The 223 rem shooting 45 gr Winchester (white box) ammo works great and is cheap to shoot.  When the wind picks up and the dogs move out farther, the it's time to break out the 243 win and use 70gr Speer TNT's.

So test out some Sper 70 gr TNT's in your 6mm.  I think you will like them.

Don't forget to take some shooting sticks (home made) and a plastic bucket to sit on when shooting.
Happy shooting, may you hit what you aim at.

Driving out west is out for me, although I would love to make it...I just don't think the old Dakota could make it :? .  However, if we can get enough people around for one in Ohio like was proposed, I would definitely make it to that.  The regional idea sounds good to me.

(and to answer your question about p'dogs in Ohio...I only know of a couple places that might have them, but I don't think we could get our rifles through the front gates of the zoo )

Guys, if you're only gonna have 3 days to shoot you want to be scheduling your hunt no earlier than the 3rd week in June.  If it's a wet year you still may wind up getting rained on.  I've been going every year since '92 and yes, the best shooting is in early June, unless you get rained out, there ain't no driving on the prarie if it's wet.  Last year I went after the 4th of July.

I am in North Dakota. Is there not some good dog towns on the Montana ND border. This would be doable for me in the spring. Keep me posted. I have several Handi rifles. 223 and 280 would be good dog guns. Got a BC on the way. Also have a 44 Mag and 22 inch 45-70. I could make it to about anywhere in SD,ND or Montana. I don't have one of those pesky jobs to interfier with my hobbies. Retired. Count me in.
shot placement is everything.

GREYBEARD;

If all us can come to a decision on time and dates, and a location. You can hook up with me going north since I live on the Tennessee and Alabama border. In fact I'm just one mile west of I-65.
Been thinking of going to Kansas next year to see Tommy Mace, who makes Leadhead bullets.
But, hey if I can go somewhere and shoot, I'd be a lot happier.
So GB, if it all comes together, just head this way.  :-)
