what do you reccomend???
« on: December 30, 2004, 07:26:55 AM »
I stopped by  Ed's the other day and picked up a new G2 pistol frame.  Didn't have the cash for a barrel at the same time (which considering his stock, almost made me cry).  I need something that "could" (I'll more than likely buy another barrel or two before next deer season) be used to hunt deer with but which I can get ammo for OTC (don't have anywhere to reload) and that can be shot by my kid's/wife.  Right now I'm leaning toward a .357 mag so I can substitute .38's for plinking and then go to full power for deer out to 75 yds or so.  I think I am about 95% settled on this but what say you about other calibers?  Only others I am aware of would be .44Mag/.44Spl or maybe .454 Casull/.45 Colt.

Thanks,
mamerch

for the g2 the 454 is out.
the 44 mag would be a better choice then the 357 mag for deer. The 357 id on the light side for deer but it can take them if the shot is just right
the 45 colt you cna get the low pressure cowboy loads then move to the hot stuff from corbon and other custom loaders.

I had forgotten that the .454 wasn't a G2 cartridge.  I guess the .38's would be cheaper than the .45's and .44's.  I think I'll probably order the .45 Colt barrel.  My kids have shot the cowboy loads out of a Vaquero with little if any kick so that isn't a big deal.  Thanks for changing my mind!  I'm in MD also, where are you?

I would choose the .357 Max over the .357 mag... you can still shoot factory .357 mags/.38...both my 10 & 14" Max barrels will shoot Mags/Specials fairly well, certainly well enough to deer hunt at 75 yards or so,  and you may find some factory loaded Max ammo laying around getting dusty on at some gunshows/dealers. If you do start loading in the future you can load the max up to full potential.

Based on your statement about buying a deer barrel later, I'd go for the .357 Magum or a .223.  Both offer cheap ammo and low recoil (although the .223 will be loud).  Both "can" be used for small deer, but neither is ideal.  The Maxi will cost a premium if you can find a barrel, the .45 will have to be the straight .45 Colt, not the .45/.410 barrel if you want accuracy.  The .44 is not a bad choice, except that ammo will be relatively expensive - price some commercial .44 Special ammo, it isn't cheap.  You can buy commercial reloads in most of these chamberings, if you can find them, to save costs.  Save the deer barrel for later when you have more time to think about it.  The first barrel should be for fun and learning.

I am trying to get an encore and think I came up with a way but it is going to pe expensive.

My personal favorite bbl. for the task you describe is head and shoulders the 45 win. mag.. Plenty for deer etc and it handles 45 ACP's with outstanding accuracy and minimum fuss..... 45 win mags. are fairly expensive I suppose, but ACP's are cheap and plentiful.... Marty ........ $0.02
