7mm08 Heavy barrel or standard ?
« on: December 30, 2004, 01:41:11 PM »
7mm08  308  or  30-06  ???   Heavy barrel   or   standard ?

Thinking of purchasing a 7-08 for whitetail hunting....salesman is telling me that the 26" heavy barrel will be more accurate above 100 yd. shots.

Or is a 308 or a 30-06 a better choice?

Any suggestions ?   Thank you

What's the longest shot you're contemplating?

I jus got a new Encore with a standard .308.  With some rounds (150gr) I've gotten .75" groups at 100 yrds.  The heavier rounds I hunted with this season I couldn't get any better than 4" so far... good enough that I landed one.  I'm going to try some lighter rounds next season.

At the ranges you're talking... assuming you use a scope.... I would think the heavy barrel is just heavy.

I don't think heavy barrels are anymore intrinsically accurate.  They are favored by varmint shooters who shoot a lot of bullets in a short period or time.  For a deer rifle I would consider where and how I hunt.  Are you going to be in a stand all day or do you move around?  How does the barrel configuration handle for you?  Lastly, what appeals to you aesthetically?  As far as caliber........from the options you have selected........the deer isn't going to care.  If I was allowed only one caliber it would be the 30-06.
