I understand that the 45-70 cartridge, when introduced, was originally intended for a 500gr bullet for the full length barrel Springfields. There were complaints about recoil using the cavalrymen's Springfield carbine, so the 405gr bullet was introduced.

My question is.....For those of you using the guide gun, how do you feel about the recoil with 500gr, 405gr and 350gr cast bullets? Is there really a big recoil difference between the 22", as opposed to the 18.5" barrels?

I'll be reloading for the guide gun soon. Ordered some Oregon Trail 350gr cast bullets. I may go heavier after a while, but I was just wondering what your experiences were beforehand.

Hog,
I can't feel any difference in recoil between the 22" and the 18" barrels. My GG is ported so there is less muzzle flip with my 18". As far as bullet weights go, it depends on how fast you push them. A factory 405g load is not at all uncomfortable to shoot. On the other hand, you can push a 300g or 350g bullet to the point of not being any fun, at all, to shoot.
I would suggest a recoil pad replacement. I used a Decelerator, and it made a lot of difference in the comfort level of the gun.
I load mine for the best accuracy which is somewhat less than max.
I have owned all three, 18", 22" and the 26"CB. I have only one now, the 18" GG. It fits my needs better than the others.

Same here...I've had 2 1895GS...and 1 Cowboy...and the actual recoil is about the same...but the percieved recoil is different...the shorter the barrel..the more of the muzzle blast you'll deal with...especially shooting at a range with wood sides between the stations and a roof overhead...but out in the open there isn't a-lot of difference...

I use a Limbsaver recoil pad on my new unported 1895GS...and it feels a a-lot better in protecteing my shoulder than the regular decelorator...alot like the triple magnum decelorator...and I also use a Uncle Mikes neoprene butstock shell holder with a piece of Ruba-tex foam under it to deaden any cheek slap...doing this makes the gun fun to shoot with even my heavy loads going thru it...and yes...it still recoils...but is no-longer painfull...on my Cowboy...I used a small Galco slip-on recoil pad with a small piece of the Ruba-tex foam to fill the curve of the plastic but -pad on the stock...and the shell holder as well...the Galco recoil pad is a fine piece of leather...and it slips on and is held by a large hidden velcro attatchment...so you don't have to alter your stock...

I'll ditto that Limbsaver----put one on my 45/70 gg and even with the hot Garrett loads there is no punishment----best invention since beer!!! :eek: pg

I have a Limbsaver recoil pad on another rifle.....I'll admit they are dandy recoil pads. Now, the 1895GS comes with what looks like a decent recoil pad right from the factory......what say you, are they any good? I'll probably try it out first before I go with another Limbsaver.

Factory pad sucks! Get a Limbsaver won't be sorry. Night and day difference.

Those factory pads on the GS is pure junk...even when you remove part of the baffles inside it...buy a better pad...LimbSaver..Hi-Viz..Decelorator...you'll be glad you did...

Men....

Can you tell me just what number limbsaver recoil pad fits the 1895GS?

I was looking at a display of these recoil pads today, and the in-store display manual doesn't list a limbsaver pad that specifically fits the 1895GS.

Which pad number did you use, and did you have to modify it?

Hog,
You can count on probably having to fit one. Even the pre-fits usually require a small amount of grinding.
Just measure the butt less the buttplate and get the one that is slightly over-sized.
You will find that you need one. The factory pad only protects the stock...not the shooter.

I have the standard length 22" 1895 and my limbsaver had to be fitted. I put 20 rounds of 45.70 350 grain PMC HA +P+ down range yesterday and don't feel any tenderness on the right shoulder today. The Limbsaver does a great job at reducing felt recoil.

The 405 grain Remingtons without the limbsaver....well........I could fire about 12 rounds and had to put the gun up.......and they are much gentler than the +p loads.....

Cowboy loads not included, 405 grain remingtons are the bottom of felt recoil, then 300 grain remingtons, but not much difference between the 2 IMHO. The PMC is up there with the buffalo bullets and garrets, at 2025 fps and 3100 lbs of energy, but much much cheaper in cost.

For what ever reason, the 1895 is quickly becoming my favorite gun to shoot, and I seldom go to the range without it. Perceived recoil can certainly be lowered with one of the good pads. I haven't tried the mercury systems, but I believe some one posted that they make a huge difference as well.

I have most of my rifles fitted with limbsavers.....no need to take a beating if you don't have to.......

Thanks for all the info, gentlemen....

I ended up getting a Limbsaver, but one of the slip-on types. Originally, i intended to remove the factory buttpad, but after I tried that out, I put the factory pad back on in addition to the limbsaver. This makes the LOP about 3/4" longer.

I found that the extra LOP is better for me and my tri-focal glasses when looking through the XS ghost ring sights.

As an extra thought, I can remove the Limbsaver during cold weather and use the original buttpad.....when I have layers of cold weather clothing on.

In theory, it sounds like a good solution for me.

one thing to keep in mind when loading a 4570 is that you dont need all the speed a good flat nosed cast bullet 500 grain or even 405 at 1200fps has alot of killing power! That load is about what a stiff loaded .500 or .475 linebaugh handgun uses and theyve killed everything on the planet. If you want to make them hurt you you can but why!
