What does the M stand for, I seem the Es but not a M.

I find no "M' model in the 1899 or 99 Savage, in Doug Murray's book "The Ninety-Nine." I recall someone on the old GrayBeard Site telling me they had a model M???
Here's what I show listed for the entire production:
1899: A, B,C, D, F, CD, H and 1899 .250-3000.
99: B, C, D, E, F, G, H, .410,
99: A, K,, R, RS, EG, T, F, DL, E, C, DE- PE (engraved presentation), 1895 (75th year Anniversary),
99: A (new saddle gun), CD (deluxe clip mag.), 99-358/375 (straight grip brush-gun)

I have to agree with SavageT. After seeing your post I did a little research in my library and could find no mention of a Model 99 M. If that is a none standard marking it sure could add value to your rifle.

When finding nothing regarding a "99 M" I held off posting because I was sure that SavageT has far more knowledge of the Model 99 and would be posting. My resource material included old Gun Digests and "The Gun Digest Book of Modern Gun Values." A lot of Model 99's are listed starting with the 99A and progressing down the list, but no Model 99M.

SavageT could the serial # range on his rifle help you date it?

Yes, as long as it was pre-1950 s/n 566,000.

I have a feeling the "M' came from a stamping on the gun and taken as a model designation?? Savage wasn't great about identity markings. If the poster can tell me where it is on the gun the "M" is seen perhaps I can get a better idea of the model. Please include stock(s) description: schenoble or plain forearm, pistol grip, checkering or not, butt plate info, barrel length and caliber, the marking on the trigger-lever boss (the piece that holds the lever hinge), and the location and exact stampings found on the barrel. Sometimes there is further stampings under the forearm.
