All in one Cleaning oils?
« on: January 01, 2005, 01:23:12 PM »
I've just bought an OTIS cleaning kit.  It comes with an bottle of brown oil that claims on the label to both clean the rifle, and then protect it afterwords.  My question is I've in the past used a solvent to clean my guns first, then dry, then use gun oil on them.  I know that there are other multi purpose one step "clean & protect" products out there.  Are these products able to do as good as job at cleaning a rifle as using a solvent, then a oil afterwords?

That's a tugh question as most light oils will have some solvency capabilities.  I would better the folks who use 'Ed's Red' would perhaps say yes but I believe the answer is likely no.  It may work well enough but there won't be any copper removing capabilities in the cleaner/oil as that is usually a function of the ammonia in the solvent.. For powder I still love Hoppes No.9 as the smell is wonderful. For a metal fouled rifle I prefer Sweet's 7.62 as it's worked so well for a long time for me..  For oils I have used a lot of stuff but found nothing better than ATF..  It has a tremendous tempurature range and won't turn to caarnish like WD40.  It is a really good light lubricant... I am experimenting with lubes even today..as nothing is set in stone.  I use graphite or moly in a volatile carrier as a dry lube..  Works great in a 22 rimfire and won't attract the contamination like oils and greases!!
