« on: January 01, 2005, 03:09:18 PM »
i've just looked at the dimond by bowtech Rapture. its rated at 300 fps ibo. the othe bows i looked at are 310 fps. i like the price of the bow tech rapture but is the speed good for a MODERN bow?? w/ a broad head and carbon arrow the speed shoud be 270 or a bit faster. is this good for a hunting bow out to 35 yds WHEN i can shoot that far?? i will not have a peep site, just a kisser button so this should help the speed. please help and THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S are bowtech bows good for a first and only bow????? :?

The bowtech is fine.  But arrow velocity over 250 fps is way over rated.  When you get up past those speeds you are looking at a bow that shoots a very light arrow (makes the bow noisier) at 70#'s and 30" draw.  So for most people their bows will not shoot that fast.  Also at those speeds you have more problems with broadhead flight unless you use the mechanical broadheads which I personally have no use for. . . others will disagree.  The other problem with shooting for that kind of speed is that it tends to magnify anything that you may do wrong on the shot.  Look for a good bow that will shoot a decent weight arrow at about 250 or so.  Dealers and manufacturers push speed cuz speed sells new bows.  It does NOT shoot more deer.  And at normal shooting distances, which are much less than 30yds, there is no need to worry about speed.

I agree with Longwinters for the most part.  I have a BowTech that is rated around 323 fps.  With my arrow I should be getting between 280-285 with a 560+/- arrow.  "Properly tuned" I have no problems with 125 grain 2 bladed stingers.  Improperly tuned, like Longwinters stated, with that speed you can certainly screw up a whole lot more.

The BowTech is surprizing quiet.  But a bow of 250 fps is not going to be bad either.  The difference between 70 + 60 pounds with my bow is only about 10 fps and 11 pounds of kinetic energy.  I shot 2 bears this spring. One with a old Person at about 220 and one with the BowTech.  The first bear ran 40 yards and died in 20 seconds, the second 20 yards and died in 10-15 seconds.  Both bows gave me a complete pass through, lung shot each.

Moral of the story is that what is important is not speed, but where you put the arrow. It is like the gun writers pushing the new short magnums.  The deer just isn't going to know the difference if it is hit by a well placed bullet at 2,700 fps or a bullet at 2,900 fps.
