Wipers - Mind of Their Own!
« on: January 02, 2005, 08:10:20 AM »
Guys:

Got a '97 GMC, K1500, 4x4 pickup.

When I turn the wipers on then off...they don't return completely to the down position 90% of the time.  Instead, they stop at various points.  I have to turn them on then off over and over again, to get them to return to the bottom.  What a hassle. :x

In addition, when the controls are placed in the intermittent mode, they start and stop, stop, complete one or more cycles, etc.  They rarely do the same thing twice regardless if the selector is placed in different postions on the column.

I'm sure I've got some kind of module/timer problem.  Is the problem something that a "regular guy" can get to and fix?   :?

Thanks in advance guys!  ...Chris   :D

Chris:  There was a recall on the Chev's windshield wipers.  Mine quit and then restarted in a blizzard going over the summit.  Then they started working again without a problem.

I received a "recall" notice from chevy.  The computer boards for the wipers were developing cracks.  They made the repair at no cost to me.  I suspect your GMC has the same parts.  Note my vehicle was out of warranty.

Hmm?   :?

Just checked and my pickup's VIN wasn't part of the recall...but there is a notice of recall out there for some '97 trucks.  Something about the quality of the connection between the board and the wiper motor.

Guess I'll have to do some more checking.   Maybe my truck isn't covered by the general recall...since it is an intermittent problem with "some" vehicles.

Thanks for the tip Siskiyou!  ...Chris   :D

pull the connection and clean it and look for loose wires that was most of the problem with them .. if that doesnt fix it it need a wiper motor  ive had about a 50/50 mix of wires vs wiper motors

I have a '99 Chevy Silverado Z71 that has the same problem about returning to the bottom when turning them off.  I don't have the intermittent mode problem.  I checked on the fix and they told me that I would have to replace the wiper control so I figured for the price of doing that I could turn them on and off a lot.

acearch72...I thought about that too.

The only problem with turning the wipers on and off again is...at what time will they NOT come back on?  One thing is for sure...when/if that ever happens, I'm sure it won't be nice sunny day.

This is a pretty common problem on GMC trucks..I have a 1998 1500..
go to the local NAPA Store  and tell them you need the circuit board that goes in the wiper motor...All you have to do is remove the screws in the front of the motor...and replace...
