really old .22 pistol w/red grips??
« on: January 02, 2005, 10:55:38 AM »
I have an old ruger .22 semi. pistol I was told it was built prior to 1952 or 53(cant remeber which one). I was told that the grips which are original and in Brand New condition are worth alot. Something about when sturm passed away they changed all the grips of that gun to black eagles instead of red eagles. Does anyone have any other info on this? The gun has never been fired.
Thanks

I don't know about the grips, but the gun with the grips is worth a few bucks, especially if it is unfired. I'd take it to somebody who can accurately give you a value for it because it is worth some pretty good money. Then, the hard part is finding somebody to buy it, if that is what you want to do. If it was me, I'd either sell it or keep it unfired until I wanted to sell it or hand it down to my son. What you have is too valuable to shoot and you want to be sure it is well cared for. You could probably buy three or four new Ruger .22 semi-autos with what you could get for your pistol.

No if it's in unfired condition it should be worth a LOT of bucks. Contact the Ruger Collector's Association and ask them to put you in touch with a collector who might want it. Should be very desirable to a collector. The assoc. should be able to help you place a value on it.

Thanks for the information. I think I will find out the value but I will most likley hold on to it. It will be neat to know the value though!

Yes, I have read that about Alex Sturm passing and the hawk going from Red to Black. Sturm Ruger was founded in 1949 and Alex passed in 1951 so your Standard 22 is quite old and could very well be one of the first guns. Go to the Ruger web site and verify it's age according to the serial number. The grips are only valuable if they're on the right gun of that manuafacture date so your whole gun is most likely EXTREMELY valuable.
