Rechamber options for 35 cal 1-18" twist??? TC Encore
« on: January 02, 2005, 11:41:04 AM »
I've got an Encore barrel I'm considering rechambering. I'd like to know what my options are. I've learned just enough to know this is not a black and white issue. Here on GB's forums there are H&R hand-rifle folks rechambering 1-18" twist 357 mags to Whelen's, shooting 250gr and claiming great accuracy. Then, in the middle, I know of some Remington 700 owners with a 1-16" twist suggesting they've experienced some difficulties with 250gr bullets. Lastly I've phoned a couple of bullet companies (e.g. Nosler) who've suggested I'm playing with fire using anything less than 1-14"!

Good question eh?

Lilja has a suggested twist rate chart.  In 35 caliber for 240-250 grain bullets they suggest 12 inches of twist.  For 200 thru 225 grain bullets they suggest 12-16 inches of twist.  I would bet the 16 inch twist will work with lighter bullets in the 35 Remington class cartridges whille the 12 inch twist would be mainly for cartridges with greater case capacity i.e. the 35 Whelan and various 350 mags.  The British built rifles they called 'express' rifles that utilized lighter bullets and larger case capacities to generate higher velocities and more energy.  There is precious little that could not be handled by a well built 200-225 grain bullet at a reasonable velocity..  so why not???
