7mm-08, is it a good cartridge for deer?
« on: January 02, 2005, 03:44:49 PM »
I live in east Texas and will mostly be hunting woodlands with shots of less than 200 yards.  I am considering a Handi-rifle in 7mm-08.  Is this a good combo for deer?  Could you potentially take a mule deer with it or is it too small?

That 7mm-08 is about as perfect a caliber as you could find for those animals at that yardage. Good bullet placement makes for good results. The caliber is more than adequate for the task!!!!. I just got off the phone with a forum member from Arizona who's family members have used a Handi in 7mm-08 to cleanly take Mule deer and Elk....<><....

great for deer. very low recoil, and you can load her with light to heavy bullets.

7mm-08 should work for nearly all big game in North America (except moose, where it would kill it just fine, but I'd take something with a little more oomph just in case).  It's very easy on the recoil to boot, which makes it an excellent choice.

What do you guys think about the factory fitted 7-08 22" superlight barrel listed on the web site? What makes it "superlight"? Do you think it would be quite a bit lighter than my 26" 25-06 barrel.
Lastly does anyone out there have one?

Yes it will be lighter than your 26" 25-06 barrel...if your possibly thinking of getting rid of your 26" barrel...please let me know...I would like another one...I have a Handi-Dandy little project in mind for it....(Thanks Fred M)

We have seen a lot of accuracy complaints about the superlight barrels. I'd go with a standard weight.

I have no experience with the 7-08, but a good deal of experience with the 7x57, its ballistic twin. They don't come any better for medium game out to medium yardage. The 7-08 is reputed to be a bit more accurate, a claim I find hard to believe.

About ten years back, I built a 7x57 for a friend who raises apples. She ain't a shooter, she ain't a hunter, she's just a farmer who needs to control pests. I gave her a box of 50 shells with the rifle and she's still working on that box. She's killed over 20 deer with it, and only shot a second time once. This is a little more remarkable since she only weighs about 120 pounds.

The 7-08 should do as well.

For East Texas, 7mm-08 would be just what you need.  But for the Mulies, in West Texas, New Mexico, or Arizonia, I'd go with something with a bit more range.  I can't count the number of Mulies that I had to pass up because the gun I was carrying did not have the range needed for the monster buck across the meadow.

My brothers all laughed at me when I brought my 30-06 Handi to Tennessee to hunt Whitetail with them.  They carry 30-30s, 444Marlins, and 45-70s.  But they quite laughing when I dropped a nice buck across the hayfield at 400+ yards.  As far as recoil goes, the 06 can be down loaded to match a 7mm08 in that department.  From my experience a 30-06 is the bear minium for Moose.  I've seen a lot of Moose lost with smaller calibers.  Elk too.  Yes I keep reading where people talk about Julie and Mikki Collins shooting their Moose every year with a .308.  But what they don't realise is the patience and experience these two women have.  They grew up here in the Interior of Alaska.  they have the experience and know how needed to stalk close enough to do the job right with a .308.  Few men that I know could do the same things they do.  They are two of the most self sufficient persons I have ever met.

No, the 7-08 is not a GOOD deer cartridge. It's an OUTSTANDING deer cartridge. My personal favorite. There are others as good but none better. It works.

I've got a Rem Model 7 in 7mm/08 and it is my favorite deer rifle/cartdridge combo...I bought in in 1990 and have taken several deer with this gun...My load consists of 42 grains of IMR 4064 and the Hornady 139 BTSP...This load is consistent and gives me between 2650 & 2700 fps , depending of course on temperature, when I chronograph it...Those velocities may be a little low for some but my rifle has an 18.5" barrel...

fast*eddie.
I have a wildcat call 7mmSSAI. The SS stands for sore shoulder. that is what I have. It is a 7mm-08 Imp. It develops 14.31 ft/bs of recoil compared to a 30-06 19-20 ft/lbs with a 150 gr bullet . The 7mm-08 is very good with a 139 or 140 gr bullet, and that is all I ever use in that rifle. Even toke it to Africa and shot some big elk sized animals with it.

You can't go wrong with a 7mm-08, if that is still too big then go for a 250 Savage or a 257 Roberts. two  greatly underrated cartridges. Alas, only the 7mm-08 is made in a Handi.

Just an FYI, I have heard the "superlight" part on the barrel listing is a missprint.  I was told it is a standard barrel.  Call NEF to be sure.

I saw a guy kill a nice AZ buck a few weeks ago on TV with a 7-08, it got up and ran about 15yds.  By the way, it was a 200yd shot from a Contender, HANDGUN.

I'd say from a rifle it should easily handle 200yd deer.

Mine easily handled an antelope at 280 yards.  Was bigger than most of the whitetail deer hunted in southern half of the usa :-)

160 Nosler Partition at about 2550 fps.  entry and exit animal simply keeled over and there was very little meat damage.  People look at me sideways when I say the 160 is my favorite bullet in 7-08, but it does everything from moose down to squirrel :)
