High Standard a D/W Copy ??

I'm new to this forum. This is the only place I have found that discusses the D/W so here's hoping someone can help me. I have a High Standard Sentinal MKIII that I always thought was actually a D/W. But the other day I was gonna make a deal on a bbl and shroud and noticed that the "root" of the shroud is shorter than mine. The sentinal shroud extends to the bottom of the frame and actually holds the crane in.  Do we suppose that H/S actually copied the D/W to the extent that virtually all the parts interchange except the shroud??? This seems the case but maybe someone knows better. Thanks for allowing me to throw this in here.... Marty

you will find it similar to the very early "pork chop" style used for a short while. If you haven't done so yet, search this forum, there are some pictures of them in a post here somewhere with a lot of info.

Wouldn't ya know ... one of my resolutions was to loose some weight and now I'm on the search for "Pork Chops".... Oh well thanks alot for the info  and I'll keep ya posted.... Marty

There was a man named Karl Lewis who was Dan Wesson's partner from the beginning (1968).  Lewis was a brilliant gun designer in his own right and many of the unique features of the Dan Wesson design were his, including the barrel system.   At first Wesson and Lewis had no production facilities for their new brainchild, and High Standard was contracted to produce the guns.  Once Dan Wesson started production in their own facilities, High Standard continued to produce a few similar guns under their own name.  That is a very brief synopsis of the High Standard/Dan Wesson connection.

Very interresting indeed.. thanks for the history lesson. Now I suppose tht in order to find "extra" bbls. and shrouds I have to compete w/ "collecters". It's OK though I still shoot this piiece a bit cause it's in super condition. Got it in the early 80's sometime..... Anyway thanks again and I will keep ya posted on developments.. Marty

Actually, if the old DW "porkchop" barrels fit your gun, and it sounds like they might very well, they are usally very reasonable on Ebay, Auctionarms, and gunbroker.com.  I hope you find one.  Let us know if you find out if DW barrels fit the HS gun.

I will indeed keep y'all posted. I am actively looking for both a 2" and anything longer than 4"  bbls w/ shrouds.   think I will make it my business to determine what other parts do indeed fit while I'm at it . So far all I know for sure is that the grips fit perfectly.... Big deal Huh?? Later     Marty

There's a guy who has a booth at most the local gunshows in the Louisville area and he has several new and used DW porkchop barrels
I'll try and get his contact info for ya!
The next show is January 29th-30th
I also saw a Sentinial High Standard at the last gun show and they wanted $550 for it, Needless to say they packed it up and it'll be around for a while, The owner said it was RARE!!
Also Biff's GunWorld in Valley Station Kentucky also has a huge box full of Dan Wesson Barrels Cranes cylinders etc.
I haven't been around in a while but am still lovin my Dan Wesson 15-2

You guys have me confused.  I knew of the connection between High Standard and Dan Wesson and that there were High Standards on the Dan Wesson pattern in the early days, but what I think of when you say "Sentinel" is High Standard's short lived attempt to compete with the S&W Model 29.  This revolver has nothing what so ever to do with the Dan Wesson design, looks more like a S&W on the outside and has internal lockwork peculiar to this revolver and used by no other.  Did not have an interchangable barrel.

The Sentinel was a trade name that HS used for their 22s. I think you're remembering the Crusader, which is as you described.

Mine is a High Standard Sentinal MKIII, Looks exactly like a "porkchop bbl" Dan Wesson. Grips, barrel nut spanner, sights, all fit ... will let all know if a DW bbl & shroud fit after the w/e. A guy (gun shop owner) in Memphis, TN tried to get it off me back in the early 80's Telling me it wasn't safe cause it was made of "pot" metal ( he could tell cause of the color of the blue) but he would trade me out of it.... Still got it cause he peeeeed me off. Been shootin it at least once every couple months since. Later for now ..... Marty

Crusader was on a large frame and in 357, 44mag and 45LC. Double action was by a gear set. There were sets of them with a gold knight engraved on them.
Back on topic, the Blue Book relates that Sentinel MkII?MkIII in 357 were made by DW for HS in 1974-75. The MkIII was adj sight.

All True.

And to add to the 'headache history' of these revolvers,
I picked up a HS Sentinel MKIII revolver (adj sights) a few weeks ago for a truck/woods gun but the barrel states "High Standard Sentinel MKII."

I guess somebody switched the barrel and put it on a MKIII frame somewhere down the line. Mine also has the "barrel nut" on it and the cylinder latch on the crane.

It's of a Hamden, Conn. manufacture.
