Blue Dot Loads
« Reply #1 on: January 04, 2005, 01:30:49 AM »
I used to shoot 10 grains of Blue Dot with a 150-kt cast bullet but I quit using it because it was too temperature sensitive. At the time I was shooting NRA Hunter Pistol Silhouette and the load shot about 8" higher at 100 yards when it was really hot. I switched to 12 grains of 2400 and that was some better and I settled on 800-X, which was the most accurate. These loads were right at 1,000 fps. If you look in the latest Speer manual, they like Alliant Power Pistol and even old Unique. I also used to shoot 14 grains of Blue Dot with a 125-grain JHP, 6" barrel revolver and it was a real burner. Those little 125s used to really tear things up, especially things like watermellons, etc. I think now that the manuals show a lesser load as max, so check the manual before you load this because it is max.

nebrguy,
I never really had much accuracy luck with Blue Dot and the 150 or heavier bullets in my Security-Six.  But, as Steve mentioned, I use it with the Hornady 125 XTP bullet.  It leaves the barrel of the 6 incher at 1400+ fps and is devastating to say the least.  That is the load that is in my handgun at the nightstand in my bedroom.  Good-luck...BCB

Blue Dot is all I shoot in my .357.   With my older Speer manual, 16.3gr is max load.  Chrono reports 1800-1900fps with my 8" barrel Colt Python with 125gr JHP's.  ..thats max loads though, used only for hunting.

My typical load is about 14.7gr delivering around 1600fps w/125gr JHP's.

My upper end loads vary 100fps, which may be due to powder or a slight miss-weight in powder.  Never had a "dud" in the 13 years of using BlueDot with my .357.

I'm bringing this to the top due the warning on the Alliant website.

Tim

http://www.alliantpowder.com/safety/safetynotice.htm

Safety notice

Alliant Powder periodically reviews and tests their published reloading data to verify that our recommended recipes have not changed over time.

During the latest review Alliant Powder discovered that Alliant Powder's Blue DotŪ should not be used in the following applications:

Blue DotŪ should NOT be used in the 357 Magnum load using the 125 grain projectile (Blue DotŪ recipes with heavier bullet weights as specified in Alliant Powders Reloading Guide are acceptable for use).
Blue DotŪ should NOT be used in the 41 Magnum cartridge (all bullet weights).
Use of Blue DotŪ in the above cases may cause a high pressure situation that could cause property damage and serious personal injury.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Still haven't had a problem. lol

I'm on my last 3 cans of BlueDot from the case of it that I bought back in the early 90s just for the 357 w/125gr.   Although, my cans are marked Hercules.

This thread is pretty old, but since there was another post recently, I figured I'd add my
2 cents. In the late '80's some of my friends and I used Blue Dot for a time.
We got away from it due to problems with high pressure in hot weather.
Being in south Texas, we get a lot of hot weather....
I don't know if this situation was ever addressed in the following years, but
I just never have gone back and tried Blue Dot since.

Thanks for the warning, Tim.

I've used B-dot in the .357 since the early '80's.  It has never been my "go to" powder for that caliber, but I've had some very nice loads over the years.

I believe I'll heed the warning.  With 296 and 2400 available, B-dot was always just something different to use.

Thanks again.   ;)

I load 10 grains with a 158 gr jhp also. I was given two unopened bottles some time ago, so I have to burn it up somehow....

I have some that were loaded mid-range for a S&W Model 66. They were 12.0 grains of Blue dot and a Remington 125 grain bullet. They were my home defense round + general shooting stuff. I have not shoot a lot of them, and I noticed that the primers were some what flattened and some times not flattened at all. But as been said before, you can not go by that pressure sign, so I just chocked it up to primer cup differences. Those are going to get pulled down now!
