Stevens 200
« on: January 03, 2005, 06:48:20 AM »
I was just at a gun shop looking at a Stevens Model 200 rifle made by Savage.  No frills composite stock .270, cheap.   I never heard of these, does anyone have any info about this rifle?

Stevens has been around for decades most known for shotguns. Savage bought Stevens a few years ago.

Stevens rifles are all made by Savage using mostly older Savage designs. One example would be the new Savage trigger and Stock you don't see on Stevens.

The Stevens is still a Savage based on a previous Savage designs.

I have the 308 in the short action and can still get 3 inch groups at 100 yards. Someone with better eyes could do better.

I paid 269.95 for the 200 in 308.

The scope I am using is the Nikon Buckmaster 4-16 with BDC.

I paid $269.00

Hope this helps.

Decent truck/beater rifle, especially for the money.  Can also upgrade with parts by yourself as you desire or money comes in.  The ones I've seen shoot will do better than 3MOA, more like 1-1/2-2MOA.

I have 2 stevens 200s.  One in 25-06 and one in 223.  The 25-06 is the old design, staggered mag.  I put in a timney trigger and a savage lam stock and it shoots a honest 1/2" group with handloands.  One of most accurate guns.  The 223 is the newer design, single stack.  I've lightened the trigger some and painted the stock camo.  It shots about an inch with handloads.  I think I paid about $250-$270 for mine, but they have gone up.  I have no problems with mine so I would say get it if its at a descent price.

Like others have stated, the Stevens 200 is a base model Savage.  I own one in .223 and like it.  I lightened the trigger a bit and it can shoot MOA or better groups with ease.  The stock is not my favorite, but functional.  I too have the newer single stack design and aftermarket stocks are far and few between.

For after market stocks use the Savage 110 stock.  I took the old stock that came off my son's Savage 30-06, 110, and put it on my Stevens 200, 25-06.  Worked fine.  That cheap plastic Stevens stock would touch the barrel when placed on a rest, causing shots to be erratic.  I now have a Bell and Carlson stock coming to put on my 25-06.  Since Bell and Carlson do not list Stevens on their website I called them.  The Customer Service person I talked to said to order a Savage 110 stock, to fit the Stevens 200.

Nope, did not look at the date of the original post.   One of the first times I have been to this forum.  It was near the top so I read it and posted.

While I am at it:  I have a Stevens 200 in 25-06.  The best I can do with the trigger is 4 lbs, and the plastic stock is too flexiable.  I have a target stock on order.  Dropped it off yesterday at the gunsmiths to have a brake installed.  Recoil is not the concern, I want to be able to see the target after the shot.  In other words I want to see the bullet strike.  I'm going to be using this gun for shots out to 1200 yards.  At that range it's important to see the animal's reaction.

The Stevens 200 is what the Savage 110 used to be, an inexpensive no frills rifle but well built. They are a solid buy IMHO.

I just read an article on building a long range hunting rifle on a budget.  Savage and Stevens were the two rifles mentioned and supported by the author.  Out of the box accuracy was exceptional with both guns, but the Stevens did need some upgrades.  With the Stevens he mentioned installing a better trigger and stock, the Savage already had those.  That is the things I had already either done or had planned on doing.

I want it to be able to reach out 700 to 800 yards.  That is usually as close as I can get without being discovered.
