weaver rings. do they dent???

i used weaver brand rings(not weaver"style") and they dented my tube. it was a CHEAP scope. was it the cheap tube or did i over tighten?. i like these rings because they tighten varry good. i am afraid to use them on my bushnell elite scopes cause i dont whant a bent tube. thanks fo any info!!!!!!!

I have had Weaver brand rings on more than one rifle and have never had a dented scope tube.  I've used them with cheap scopes, too.

No, Weaver rings don't dent. Also I do take some precautions. I always hone the bottom halve with a 1" steel hone. Before I mount the rings I clamp them around a 1" steel bar very tight and tap the top halve with a hardwood block and a hammer to take up any slack or uneven contour.

I wipe the bottom rings with Lock tight or two part epoxy after washing them with alcohol or acetone. These rings will stand up to any recoil of normal hunting rifles including magnums and I never had one come loose.
They also provide the lightest and the least costly installation.

That's the merit in using Burris Signature Zee rings, they don't require lapping and they won't cause any damage to your scope. They don't cost that much more than other good rings and well worth the bit more that they do cost IMO. Using them is kind of a no-brainer. They look good too and won't cause the scope to roll as you tighten the ring screws as the notorious weaver rings do.

On another note, most unknowing shooters install ring screws way tighter than recommended by ring manufacturers. IIRC, Leupold recommends 13-15 inch/pounds which isn't much.

IIRC, the instructions that come with Weaver rings say to leave a 1/32" gap between the ring base and the ring leaf. Over tightening has plenty of potential to damamge something. Quickdtoo is dead to rights, that scope rolling thing with Weaver rings is a PITA, but is reasonably easy to account for and the rings are quite common. I've never had a problem with Weavers mounting system.

I have dented some scope tubes with the old Weaver rings.Go to wallmart and buy the weaver Quad lock rings,they work very well and won't dent or make the scope roll over any.The leoupold rifleman rings are very good also.The Burris zee rings are the best looking and super strong,I have used them all,and they work fine.It's just how much do you want to spend?

The Leupold rings on my Savage dented the tube of my Simmons Aetec.  Doesn't affect the scope but it has no resale value now If I ever decided to sell it.  Probably won't though.  Even still, it pi$$ed me off to see it.

Stepping on soap box...Burris sig zees are only $27 at Midsouth when they have em, were on sale at Midway for $25 all month in November,  I buy em on sale when I can, then I have em when I need em. Every scope I've ever mounted with em could be sold as new if they don't have some other ding or scratch put in em from use, I really like em and see no reason to use any other just to save a few $$ in ring cost. The money saved in scope value is more than enough to cover the cost of many ring sets....And if you have a misalignment problem, the offset insert kit comes to the rescue for $9, no shimming which will further damage a scope.
