.270 Ren for NRA hunter pistol
« on: January 03, 2005, 10:14:25 AM »
I use to shoot hunter pistol (10 years ago) was thinking of getting back into it. What loads are you using? I was using 5grs of 800-x and a 100 grs Remington SP. If I remember right I was getting 1000-1200fps but don't rember right now. I know you can load it alot faster but I never had trouble leaving any rams (didn't like getting hit in the eye with the scope either). Has anyone tried Lil-gun? Or do you have any idea were to start the load data with it? Thanks

There was a very good article in the September 2004 issue of the IHMSA News concerning the 270 REN.  It was very detailed.  If you PM me your mailing address, I would be happy to send you a copy of it.

270 Ren for NRA Hunter's Pistol

I have only tried the 90 HP Sierra #1800; no other bullets in my Rock XL. Hodgdon Clays and Universal were not satisfactory and I use the Win-231 load listed below due to mild recoil. Group sizes are AVERAGES of ten shot groups, not selected best groups. Overall Length for all loads is 1.82 in. I've been shooting Master Class since 1989. Accurate #5 and Win 296 have too much recoil for me to shoot Taco style.

            270 REN   LOADS

            90gr Sierra .277 (#1800) OAL 1.82  R-P Nickle cases annealed

             4 gr. Win 231 - 2 MOA

4.5 gr. Accurate #5  - 1.8 MOA  but stout recoil

7.5 gr.  Win 296 -  1.5 MOA  but stout recoil

            10 gr.  Win 296  -  1.3 MOA  face slapper

I use a 270 Ren for field pistol. I tried the Lil' Gun but did not find a good load for it. I use Rem 100gr bulk bullets over 9gr. AA #9. It has low recoil and takes over what I hit, except for big bore rams. I use a red dot scope. I have tried a pistol scope, shotgun scope w/circle reticle and high power rifle scope on this gun but like the red dot best. I cannot hit any more targets with it but it is more comfortable to shoot. I really like the Ren for field pistol. Hope this helps. Thanks!
