Project Rifle
« on: January 03, 2005, 05:05:10 PM »
Have recently acquired a low-mileage, used Savage 11-GNS in .22-250.  It is currently equipped with the standard wood stock and sporter-weight barrel.

My goal is to put together a low-cost, sub-moa, general-purpose varminter for use on coyotes, ground squirrels, crows and jackrabbits at 100-300 yards.  Also interested in paper-punching up to 500yards.

No need for the new rig to be a "walking" or "calling" rifle as I already have a NEF HandiRifle in .223 to handle the <100 yard stuff.  Nor do I need another so-called "tactical" rifle as I also have a 700PSS in .308.

So, I would like to install a varmint-profile barrel, adjustable trigger, synthetic stock and scope mount.  I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 and Burris Zee rings that I wish to use in this project.

My budget is $500 (not incl the rifle, scope, rings).

Can it be done?

Suggestions appreciated.

You have it right now.  Put some good glass on it and it will do what you are wanting to do.  If you want to make it a little better, spend $60.00 at midway for one of the Timney trigers and you are done.  Larry
A gun is just like a parachute, if you ever really need one, nothing else will do.

I would pretty much ditto trotterlg. you may want to free float the barrel if it is not already. but if you just have too change it i think you will go over budget. just a good barrel blank is in the two dollar range and then it needs to be chambered.  timmney trigger 60.00.  what type stock you want?  i have not priced them in awhile but i would think a good synthetic stock will set you back a couple hundred, and you will need good glass to shoot 500 yards, at least three hundred dollars. you could by used glass it may take awhile to find what you want but deals are out there. a laminate varmit stock from boydboys.com is about 65.00 you will have to finish it and do some minor inletting and bed it to your action.  so i think you  will be in the 600.00-800.00 range when all is said and done. hey you don't have to get it all at one time either it could be a shooter and work in progress for a while. it took me 8 years to get my .260rem together. when i started the project the .260 rem was a wildcat 6.5-08. and i just recently update the scope again for the third time.
