Elementary question on how to grip a contender
« on: February 02, 2003, 04:32:47 AM »
I have been shooting my Contender daily and am finding that I am having sporadic results. I mostly have been shooting a 7-30 waters. I have a good rest and for the most part keep a very loose grip. I notice when it goes off the muzzle jumps a foot, foot and a half up. I read someones response to a question on this board about "If you don't keep muzzle control you have nothing". I guess first what exactly does that mean and second what do any of you find works best on medium caliber handguns. I shoot bow and I always maintain a very loose bowhand. Are you not supposed to do the same with a handgun? I realize on the big guns you would have to hang on but that's not the case here. My groups have not been bad but I find I get one flyer out of four shots, sometimes two which is very frustrating Thanks fellas for any help.

it doesnt matter.  the important thing is that whatever you do, do it the same way every time.   the biggest mistake i see people do is trying something different every time they pull the trigger.   shoot groups the same exact way every time, figure out what works  (and what doesnt) and go from there.  the main thing is to make sure that whatever you are doing, that you are consistant.

Elementary question on how to grip a conten

You didn'y say if you were shooting from a bench or not, but one thing that has a big impact with me is weather I have my elbows locked or not. If I do the shots will be all over the place. I have found that a firm grip from the hand only, not your fore arms or upper arms works best for me. After I grip the gun I make it a point to try and relax my arms as much as possible and let the gun do whatever it wants. Short of hitting me in the head of course. I'm sure its a trial and error thing to find whatworks best for you but Myronman3 is right, when you find what works do it the same way every time. Hope this helps. KN

Marv,

I agree with the other comments.  I firmly grip it, but I don't try to control the recoil.  If the muzzle wants to rise an inch or ten inches, I let it.  The bullet has already left the muzzle by this time anyway.
