coyote targets?
« on: January 04, 2005, 12:22:30 PM »
Anyone know where I can get some coyote targets or what I can do to improvise?  Ive tossed around all kinds of ideas for a handgun to use for 'yotes.  Ive decided Im going for the gusto challenge and will use my .45 Sig with factory sites.  BUT I need to practice a lot before I attempt any kind of hunt and want a target that gives me a good object to shoot for.  I havnt seen any of these types of targets around but was hoping someone here might know a place.

P.S. just for the record Im limiting myself to 25 yards PERIOD.  I dont care how good I get or how flat the load I develop will shoot......25 yards is it (besides, it adds more to the challenge  :-D .)

Origionally I was thinking of just setting up paper plates at 25 yards and planned on counting the hits on the flat inner part (not the frilly edged part) as good hits.  But I was hoping for something....I dunno, that looked like a 'yote.  Ahhh shucks, I guess It dont really matter too much.  But any more suggestions are welcomed.

This takes some playing around to get the size right but cut out a picture from a magazine. Hang it in a method that you can shine a good light on it so that it casts a shadow on an large piece of paper or cardboard. Adjust the distance of the light till you get the shadow size you want. Trace the shadow with a marker and wala, poor mans coyote target. Cut out and use as a pattern for more. Actually if you have access to an overhead projector (for those of us who remember what they are) those work great. A light with a beam that can be directed works best (Maglite).
Also check the archery shops for targets. Good luck.
Just another worthless opinion!!

Well, thanks for the idea dakotashooter2.  I found a pretty good black and white line drawing complete with vital zone markings.  Now I just gotta work out the enlargement part.  About the sizing, about how big should I get this target fromthe back to the bottom of the chest?  I am assuming the measurements noted by josebd of 8 to 10 inches is the vitals sizing, right?
Thanks

P.S. So that anyone else looking for targets this is the picture Im using to base the blow-up on:
