I have been seeing a few of the Turkish Mausers still around, dark stocks and dinged up they are, but so darn affordable. :-) Some of them have receivers from WW 1, do most of them have the original barrel, or have they been re-barreled over the many decades?

Turkey is an arid place, do the desert guns like the Turkish rifles have greater wear from the dust getting into the actions and being abrasive, etc?

You guys have have them, how do you like em'?

You find them in all conditions from barrels worn out and cracked stocks to ones that are great. Mine was rebarreled and the bore is mint on mine though it does show handleing wear on the blueing. I can tell it was rebarreled as the barrel and reciever numbers do not match. It headspaced perfect on a no go guage also so I know it was not shot much after it was rebarreled. Mine has excellent wood also. And the kicker was I paid only 50 bucks for it as the safety wing was busted a part my gunsmith gave me free and it is a excellent Turk.

My '38 Turk 8mm mauser was my very first buy when i got my C&R FFL a few years ago when they were $39.95. Aim Surplus had them in very good condition and thats exactly what condition it was in. I was very shocked to recieve a gun in this condition for $39.95 with a good bore. My only regret is I wish i had bought more. Now i see that Century had them again lately but for much more but i think they were older . BigBill

jh45gun...that is the best looking Turk Mauser I have ever seen. There have been a batch of Cz V-24's that have come in over the last several years with varied conditions too, most of the batches of those have been with the usual dinged up dark stocks, and corrosion damaged bores, looked shootable, but hey, they were only around $80.00!

Back in the late 1980's a bunch of Chinese Hanyangs (Chinese made 1888 commission copies) came in that had generally nice exteriors, but the bores were so shot out that you had to really look hard to see any hint of rifling at all. I have also seen some egyptian Hakims that had badly worn bores, and decent exteriors, I wonder if those were the boot camp guns, lots of shooting, little field carry under combat conditions? :?

I got one for Christmas from aim surplus for $80, and it is one of the most accurate rifles I have. I could hardly believe what good condition it was in. I couldn't be more pleased.

Thanks Chris, Yea it has exceptional wood in it. THe bore and headspace were so good like I said earlier I had to have my smith put a peep sight on it as you can see in the picture. I cannot shoot mauser sights too darn fine and a gun this nice is made to shoot. Got some mauser sight inserts laying around gonna adapt a fiber optic sight to one of those and put a fiber optic front sight to go with my rear peep sight combo. I have that on my 30/30 and some of my muzzle loaders and I really like it. Jim

Sure there is sand, but there is also less humidity
for those corrosive salts to pull out of the air. The moisture
would be far more damaging than the sand I think.

The first Turk contract Mausers were 7.65x54. They rechambered and rebored them early on. I do not know when but it had to be when they threw in with Germany in the "War to end all Wars". They must have done a thorough job as I have never seen a Turk surviving in the Belgium cartridge. I keep looking, you never know. JBMauser.

From what I have read and it makes sense is the 1903's that were converted to 8MM you can tell as the front ring has a cut out on it for the nose of the longer bullet to fit the reciever. I had such a 1903 that was like that. I traded it off when I got my current Turk as the bore and wood on the last one was much better. I figured I need only one 8mm as I plan to only shoot cast in it so it the bore should about last forever. Jim

Well like I said I guess I do not have the collecting bug like some. THough I own 3 Mausers they are different calibers and models 8MM Turk 98 Swede 96 6.5x55 and a Spanish 93 7x57. I do have 2 Mosins though.

At one time I had 3 shootable Turks and 2 not shootable. Came to the conclusion there is one of me and I can only shoot one at a time. THis Turk 98 I have now should last me for my life time expecially shooting mostly cast I have enough guns they can pass around after I depart. :shock:
