sizing die for cast bullets in .308 Handi
« on: January 05, 2005, 02:58:41 AM »
Hi guys, quick question, what diameter sizer would you recommend for cast bullets for a .308 Handi?

I already have a .312 die for my Lee Enfield, I'm assuming that that would be too large.

So what do you think? .311, .310, .309 ?

Thanks,

.310 if you are buying. Before you buy, you might try using the .312 you have to lube and GC. A lot of the .30 cal moulds, especially the Lees, cast right around .310 anyway and don't really need more than having the GC crimped on. I use a .311 sizer because that's what I have. Works well enough so I have not bothered to buy a .310.

I couldn't get a .310 from Lee without a custom order, so I went with the .309
and will try that.  I was concerned that using a .311 would lead too much.

If the .309 rattles like a stick in a garbage can I'll try the .311!

Thanks for your help.

If you don't like the results with the .309, just coat some cull bullets with fine valve grinding compound and shuck them through. Four bullets coated with 320 grit and run through over and over until they pass thorough easily will open one up about .0015. That's just grabbing the top one and running it through again. You can slick things up by stopping short, cleaning up, and doing another cycle with 600 grit.

I stamp the new size on the lock ring. Die body is harder than my ex-wife's head.

Folks worry about leading too much.
