Ultra Varmit in .223?
« on: January 05, 2005, 04:58:58 AM »
I currently have the Handi in a 45-70 and took a nice 11 point whitetail with it last year.  Im thinking about getting a Ultra Varmit in a .223 with the 24 inch barrel for coyotes and wood chucks.  Any members with input (good or bad) would be appreciated.  I have heard a few people mention case sticking issues with the .223??  Also what about accuracy?  Getting groups inside a dime at 100 yards is not a primary concern of mine, however I do expect consistant "kill zone" shots at this range.

I've got the .223 Ultra, 24" bull barrel and love it! It's great with bullets up to about 55gr, and I'm grouping MOA consistently with it. On a good day, I've gotten 1" at 200yds.

The .223 Ultra seems to shoot well with Winchester 45gr HP's, "White Box" ammo. Wally World has them for $12 for 40; also Ultramax if you can find them. 40, 50, 55gr Ballistic Tips for $18 for 50.

Good luck!  8)

Mine shoots sub moa, no stuck cases ever cuz I did a chamber polish before I ever shot it , I only shoot win white box 45gr JHP or Ultramax 40gr Nosler BT ammo. Best groups have been .265" and .440" at 100yds with the win white box.

I have the UV in 223, my nephew reloaded 40gr ballistic tips with H322 powder, that is what my gun seems to like for good accuracy, have shot it out to 300 yards at paper, I am very happy with it now, the 55gr really didn't group as well as I would like but were well within hunting parameters at 100 yds.

Alright that does it I'm ordering a Lamo/Camo stock for my Handi.  Too Pretty.  Anyone know what size or stock number for a recoil pad to order for it?

Mine shoots the Winchester White box stuff really well (3/4" groups), and the Ultramax 55grn Nosler Ballistic tips nearly as well. I love the gun, but the ground hogs and starlings really hate it:-D
Zach

--I'll have to give the 40grn ballistic tips another try. When I first tried them the target looked more like a pattern from a shotgun than a group from a rifle. Really scared me at first until I tried the 55 grn ballistic tips.

Thanks Jeff, But H&R won't ship to Canada, so I'll have to order from Brownells.

Coastwatcher, the Sims Limbsaver grind to fit #10541 will fit the H&R laminated or wood stocks, not sure if the Brownell's is the same or not. None of the Limbsaver prefit pads will fit any of the H&R stocks. Eabco lists one for an SB2 988 slug gun, but the template at Sims doesn't match any H&R stock that I have.

Coastwatcher, I mail to Canada( :-D ) so if it will save you time. work and money I would be happy to order it for you and when it gets here just remail it right to you, it would cost you the cost of the stock set and the shipping twice but if it helps let me know. The bad thing is since I live in Mass I have to pay a 5% sales tax on the order, if this sounds good to you perhaps someone in a state outside of Mass could do it for you and save the 5% sales tax....<><....

Beekeeper, what kind of powder did you use with the 40gr., we tried H335, H322 and two others but my gun liked the lighter 35 and 40gr bullets with the H322 for some reason. My understanding is the 335 was developed for the 223 but it didn't shoot quite as well in my gun as the 322. Others have had better success with other powders, seems like you have to experiment a lot to get to what your particular gun likes the best, bullet and powder.

MSP Ret,  Thanks for your offer.  I may take you up on it.  Another option is my son wants a .22WMR with composite stocks.  I may buy a .22WMR UV and swap stocks with him.  He's a pennyless college student so I'll end up on the hook for both,  but he's a good one. Second generation handi-aholic.

The 40 grain noslers were loaded ammo from black hills. I don't reload yet, but I plan to start later   I can get the 55grn noslers loaded by Ultramax when they are run on sale locally, and will probably stay with those since they shoot minute of starling out of my rifle. The good thing is that the more I shoot this gun, the better it seems to get
