Glass Bedding A Tikka?
« on: January 05, 2005, 05:27:58 AM »
My son has a Tikka Model 695 "Whitetail Hunter" in 7mm Rem Mag.  He lost the rear stock screw and shot it a few times before realizing it.  Since replacing the screw, the accuracy has deteriorated.

I have bedded several rifles - Rugers, Remingtons, etc - but this Tikka has a strange recoil lug setup.  The lug is a very short extension of the front screw boss and a plastic plate is inserted in the stock to take the recoil.

I'd like to bed it, but am not sure what to do.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is the recoil lug arangement.  The block inlet into the stock is the recoil lug, the notch on the action is simply the engagement notch for the lug.  First ascertain where the rifle needs bedding.  How bad is the accuracy, compared to what? Is there any visible damage to the inletting? Loosen the front and rear action screws, one at a time, with the other screw tightened down.  Is there any movement of the metal in the stock of the end of the action that screw retains? To 'see' the movement place the fingers of the hand not holding the screw driver so that the pads of the fingers bridge the joint between the metal and the stock. Minute amounts of movement can be sensed this way.. Is the barrel free floated?
