22-250 or .220 swift?
« on: January 05, 2005, 09:12:43 AM »
I am going to get a varmint barrel for my encore, which caliber should I get 22-250 or .220 swift. I have a bolt action .223 for 0-300yds the encore is going to get pulled out for those occasional far shots on sage rats and prairie dogs. Help me decide.

Check the balistics and engergy on the ruger 204. It is the same or more than the 22-250 with less powder behind it. Just my thought, I am going to try this round and see what it does. Good luck.

I like both rounds and if you reload your own ammunition either one can be spiced up very nicely. If you don’t reload maybe you should think about looking through the various catalogs and local dealers to see what ammo is available to you and make a decision that way. I’m sure there are more choices in factory ammo for the 22-250 than there is for the Swift. I reload though and I would choice the Swift myself. I like that little edge the Swift has over the 22-250 but that’s just me. In the real world of long range shooting there isn’t much more than a nickels worth of difference between the two of them.

I don’t know anything about the 204 yet so I can’t comment about it.

I reload so that is not an issue. I would like to wait a little longer on the .204 due to brass and more information on the round. Thanks for the input.

Get yourself a fast twist 22-250 or 22-250 Improved.  Those 68-75gr bullets fly like a lazer bolts.   The only reason I would go with the 22-250 over the 220 is availablitiy of ammo and components.
