King Eider hunting in Alaska
« on: February 02, 2003, 11:48:44 AM »
Me and a couple buddies are interested in coming up to Alaska next year for king eider.  Can anybody recommend a reputable guide in Alaska that specializes in this type of watefowl hunt.  Any help would be appreciated

I don't think that anyone would specialize in this type of duck.  As you can see from the regulations you would only be allowed 4 King Eiders as a non-resident.  You probably have to hunt along the Bering Coast between the nesting grounds, Barrow, and the wintering, Aleutians.  There are some duck hunting guides out there but the King Eiders would seem to be an incidental kill.

"SEA DUCKS (harlequin ducks, long-tailed ducks (formerly oldsquaw), all eiders, scoters and mergansers):  Resident hunters may not take more than 6 daily, 12 in possession each of harlequin or long-tailed ducks. Daily sea duck limits for nonresidents are equal to general duck limits for the zone (7, 8 or 10). Nonresidents may not take or possess more than 20 sea ducks per season, including no more than 4 each of harlequin, long-tailed duck, black scoter, surf scoter, white-winged scoter, common eider, or king eider per season.  Steller's and spectacled eiders are closed statewide."

Yeah - I know about the limit of 4 per species and 20 per non-resident hunter per year.  I don't necessarily mean I ONLY want to shoot king's but I want to be reasonably sure I'm hunting with an outfitter that has King's in the area and can give me good advice on when to come for them.  I would also like to take Pacific Eider's and Harlequin if possible but I'm primarily after the King's.  If anyone knows specific names of outfitters that they think are reputable please let me know.

The above URL will give you the links to many Alaskan Guides.  I can not vouch or endorse any of them as I have never used a guide.  I looked throught the list a bit and did not spot anyone that does ducks.  I know that some do.  I hope that this helps.

I know the bird hunting here can be fantastic. I was taken out by a group of Eskimo friends once and had the best hunt in my life. Way up north!
