Author Topic: Encore 7mm-08 misfire? (Read 924 times)

I have been having trouble with misfires from my 7mm-08 Rem Encore pistol. I bought it new this past summer as a 209x50 muzzleloader rifle and purchased the pistol accessories separate. The muzzleloader has never given me a problem and shoots great.

I started shooting Remington 140gr. Partition and had 11 out of 60 rounds misfire. I switched to 140 gr. Remington core-lok and had 3 misfires from one box. I thought it might be the Remington ammunition, so I switched to Winchester 140 gr. Ballistic tip and got 5 misfires from one box. I'm convince that it's not the ammunition since it happened with both ammunition manufactures.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with there Encore? If so what can I do to fix it?

How much of an impact is the firing pin making on the ones that mis-fire? Are you getting a good dent or is it just a small dimple? If it's a light strike you may try backing your trigger overtravel screw out a bit to make sure you'r full power from the hammer. It also could be that the chamber has too much headspace and is letting the case move forward too much. The case head should be flush with the back of the bbl with a chambered round. You can lift the case over the extractor to check it without removing the bbl. If it's the latter send it back to TC and they'll fix you up.

The firing pin is putting a good dent in the primer, I had the round checked at the local gun smith and it creates a .022 indent in the primer, which is more than enough to fire the round. Could it be the hammer extension I use? I was thinking that it might not be enough of a strike to fire the round, if so, shouldn't it misfire on the 209x50 muzzleloader as well?

I guess that would depend upon the hardness of the 209 primer that you are using with the muzzleloading barrel.

My idea would be to take off the hammer extension and see if you still get the misfires. A long time ago I had a similar problem with hammer extensions on a Contender frame and using it without the extension resolved the problem.

I believe T/C recommends against the hammer extensions.

More than likely the hammer extension is the problem. Have a 338/06 that was doing the same thing, took the hammer extension off and haven't had a problem since.Mike

I had the problem 3 times on a Contender that was finally traced back to the hammer extension. T/C said at the time that the extension probably weakend the hammer spring and it should be changed, which was done for free. That was 12 years ago and no misfires since. I will never use one on a Contender.

I have heard of problems with the Encore, but not as often as the Contender.

What type of extentions are you guys using? The one I have is ambi and made of aluminum, weighs nearly nothing and so far I havent had any problems.

I believe all the ones I used were machined steel, different brands. I think I have about three of them packed away in a box somewhere. That aluminum sounds like it may work better, but I am not finding any need for one to try they type.

The hammer extensions that I'm using is steel and has some weight to it. I got it from Virgin Valley some time ago. I'll try removing it and seeing if that fixes the problem.

I also spoke with T/C yesterday, they do not recommend using extensions because of a safety issue. They said that the weight of the extension is not letting the hammer fly fast enough to strike the primer, resulting in a misfire.

Duffy, where did you get your aluminium extension?

Mine is a Petersons and I got it from Midsouth Shooters supply. Only thing I don't like is that the set screw chews up the side of the hammer a bit.

Duffy, I contacted Midsouth Shooters and they don't carry an aluminium extender, they do carry a steel one that is made by Peterson's but not an aluminium one. Do you know any one else that carry's aluminum extenders? Thanks

Boy I don't know if they changed them or someones off in left field but that's where I ordered mine from and it's definately NOT steel. I'ts black anodized aluminum.
