Pawn Shop Rolling Block Rifle
« on: January 06, 2005, 04:54:24 PM »
I found a Rem. rolling block rifle in a pawn shop of a friend of mine today. It looks like the ones on the net that are called Mexican, judging by the rear sight. It has a breech block just like a No1 ,thumb lever turnde up, but has large barrel shank like a No5. I didn't look to see what size firing pin it had. It looks like cal. is 7mm. I think the last pat. date is 1874 My question is , is this a late no1 or an early no5.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Montanan, I looked at the RRB rifle again today. It has the small fireing pin, sliding extractor and from what I've seen I now think it is a Model 1897 NO.5 smokeless action. The reciever is in pretty good shape, very tight with a few small pits. I think it will make a good action for another build. It will be up for sale in about 3 weeks, hope I can get it.

Seems you've already figured it out. It is a #5 smokeless action. Hope you get it!
