Anybody using a red dot type site on their .22 plinker/squirrel gun? I just got a catalog from Sportsman's Guide and they have a 30mm BSA red dot type site for $24 that I am thinking about putting on a stainless .22lr. Anybody have any experience with these red dots? Any feedback you can give me would be appreciated.

I threw mine away after it fogged up on me one day when patterning my 835 ultimag in a light sprinkle. I wouldn't want to rely on it for hunting, but plinking might be ok.....as long as you have a backup gun so it doesn't spoil your fun!! The Truglo is waterproof and fogproof, cost a bit more, but IMO, is a better optic, they sell for ~$40.

I've got a Tasco red dot mounted on my Sporty in 22lr. Light weight and Handi.

2 inch spinner at the chicken berm of a rimfire silouette range is not safe. Remington Golden Bullets bulk pack ammo.

Given some trial and error it'll hit rams from a rest as well.

Red dot has 11 brightness settings. Takes some fiddling to get it just right for the light conditions you are shooting in and how much target you want to cover. Brighter dot has a bit of flare to it, making the dot seem bigger when cranked up real bright. Not sure of the size of the dot at what range. It's an older model, not sure if I still have the owners manual.

I've leant this set-up to a few first time shooters. Great for them, put the dot on what you want to hit and squeeze the trigger. First few times on paper then to spinners and clays rested on the berms.

Overall it's a neat set-up.

If you want more info on this particular red-dot, I'll try to find the book.

Ok, found the owners manual.
Tasco Pro-Point 3

Reticle is listed as Small Dot 5 M.O.A Big Dot 10 M.O.A.

Included extension tubes (sunshades) and a polarizing filter. (forgot that was in the box) Haze caps (their words) with stretchy cords.

Battery life has been great for me. It came with 2 batteries and I have replaced them 2-3 times in almost 6 years. Found the receipt in the box as well. $199 in 1997.

If I were to get another red-dot, it would have a smaller dot and I would keep the brightness settings. Or variable dot and brightness. Link provided by MSPret might have info on those, I haven't read it yet.

I didn't know they still made this thing. Must have been top of the line in it's day. Still happy with it and might even get another for that price.

I just sent my Sportster into NEF for a 22 WMR Bull bbl. :-D

While at Wally World I saw a BSA RedDot that was priced low enough to think about. I had just read a post by MSP ret that made it sound like it'd be worth a test run for my intended purposes.

I intend to use the 22 WMR for plinking and < 75yd Predator shots.

We'll see how it goes. If I like it, I would consider a higher quality Reddot.

i picked up a 35mm NcStar red dot at a gun show last year for my 22 sportster.

sadly, i didn't like it, to me the dot was blurry and it moved off target if my eyeball wasn't exactly in the center of the eye piece. to comfirm this, i shipped it out to another "set of eye's" for an honest evaluation.

i paid $40 for it and i can tell you it wasn't worth it. don't scrimp on optics, and don't buy an NcStar !!!

SC, it was a 45mm Red Dot and as far as I can determine from the three I have the parralax problem increases at the size of the tube increases. My 1" Millet is the best followed closely by my 30mm Simmons with your thoughtful gift of the 45mm NcStar the worst regarding Parralex, I think it will work fine for a smoothbore shotgun with the average shots of about 40 yards and that is where it will find it's home for a while.
