Good cleaning rod???
« on: January 07, 2005, 03:57:32 PM »
I just broke another cheap Hoppes aluminum rod tonight.

Any advice on a good one piece rod and accessories. Best rod material, brass, stainless or coated steel?

Thanks

The best rod I can advise you to buy is a stainless 1 piece rod with a ball bearing handle.  The grit will not embed in the stainless and thus not lap the throat or muzzle.. I've heard good things about the carbon fiber rids and Carbon fiber is quite hard but!!  It is a composite held together with???? polyesterS??  I don't know for certain but that's nat a good thing.  They are stiffer than the steel rods but that should make little difference..  Pick a brand and handle material.. and as long as it a stainless steel rod and the handle contains balls bearings all will be well.  And you'll have a hard time breaking one too...

For me it depends on the action.  That is to say if it is bolt, or single shot (contender) I prefer stainless.  If I have to go in from the muzzle I use coated.  Always in either case use a bore guide.  I really like Dewey rods but I think there are others that are probably just as good.  Make sure that the handle spins freely.
