Small range report on the Ultra Comp 30-06
« on: January 08, 2005, 11:23:43 AM »
Went to the range this morning...spitting a little snow when I got there...29 deg..only took 1 box of shells with me(DUHHH)...and deceided to site in at 100 yards instead of my normal 25 yards..(Bigger DUHHHHH)...it took almost a full box(20) of shells before I was close...the gun functioned flawlessly...ejected every shell...and I was quite surprised at the little felt recoil with it,and how little it jump on the front rest...less than what I had with my bull barreled  restocked 308..anyway...I got it dialed in on the last 3 shots..not to bad for the factory load...Winchesters 165 grain black Ballistic Tips...will do some serious reloading for it now...I didn't do anything to it other than polish the bore and chamber with Flitz and clean out with Hoppes #9...I'm sure that part of the problem was a oily bore...but...over all I am extremly pleased with the rifle...my POA was the 6-oclock hold on the bottom of the #8 ring at 100 yards...the bullet hole in the 8 ring at 2 o-clock was shot #17...and I zero'd  the scope to try for the bulleye for #18,19,20...the orange square is what Hornady gives you with their die sets...it is a 1" square ..

Now if I can just find another one of these comp barrels to go along with the 30-06...I'll be even more pleased...

Mac,
If I remember correctly, this is the rifle you happened on and picked up used? If so that was a real nice find. I saw one at my dealer today, unfortunately not a comp, but a Handi in 30-06, it was wearing a Tasco 3-9x40, and a tag that said $190. I thought that was a bit excessive, even with such a great scope. :)  I'll follow your handloading for this gun with interest. While I have no expectations of finding a Comp, I think you really lucked out on that one, I am interested in either the .308 HB or a 30-06. To be honest, I still can't quite decide, although I don't think I could go too wrong with either. What kind of accuracy did you sqeeze from your 308 HB?

Nice first day out!
Don

Yep...it had only 7 total rounds fired thru it...per the elderly gentelman who traded it in on a  older Remington auto-loader...he kept the Bushy scope that was on it...and the other 13 rounds of Win 180 grain PP ammo...he purchased with the rifle a couple years ago...

My Bull Barreled 308 was a good shooting gun...I got slightly over 1/2" groups with federals Match ammo...and my next door neighbor whom I sold it to, is shooting the same size groups with Wallwy World close out 150gr. Win PP ammo...he got 3 deer with it this past season...2 with the Winchesters...and 1 buck with some Norma 180 grain OYRX ammo I gave him when I sold it to him...the Normas gave a little over 1" groups...my handloads didn't fair anybetter...but in all honesty I didn't try a-lot of different combinations...it had this really long throat on it and I was fussing around quite a-bit trying different seating depths with it...and hadn't settled on any paticular combination...

Mac,
With that .308 shooting 1/2" and 1" groups with different weights and brands of ammo, that tells me it was happy with the length of the factory ammo. I tried loading the .223 bullets out to the rifling in my Ultra, the bullets weren't long enough to do it without falling out of the case. That jump to the rifling didn't seem to bother it at all. Have you checked the chamber length in the 30-06? I was just curious if they run the same way.

Nope...I will once I start  re-loading for it this weekend,or Monday..didn't do anything other than clean and polish the chamber and bore...set the scope...and went shooting...,no o-ring or opening the barrel channel on it...... One thing I'm itching to try out ...I got a new toy to help me for reloading...one of those Lyman 1200DPS scales...it should speed up my process with reloading...

Well Mac, that Ultra Comp 30-06 sure sounds like a winner. Great for filling the freezer or putting small groups of holes in paper....<><.... :-D

I could certainly live with groups like that, after all that is MOA. Not bad for a $250 rifle............or so I've heard said somewhere.
Looks like MOHog to me buddy! Ya oughta try some 200-220 grainers and see what they'll do, if they do a well as these did then ya got a heck of a hog load for Febuary huh? Maybe even some heavy weight FMJ's.

I don't know about the 200 grainers...but I do have some Hornady 190 grain B.T.S.P. to try out...if the real heavy weights are the guns prefered bullet weight...then that does open a different door all together

Hey Mac;
I'm glad to see another a 06 handloader here!

my handi 06 (not a comp) will group factory load rem. core-loc 150gr PSP and win, power point 165gr PSP, into 1.5 inch groups.....but i really have to take my time to keep the barrel from over heating....or they will string.

I can pull in groups to inside 1inch with hand loads.

A powder that i have had good luck with is IMR4350....I know that is  slower burning  but with the case cap. of the 06  it seems to work well.
I got some really good groups using speer 150gr hot-cor PSP and 57.2 grains IMR4350.
I dont have a crony, but the speer manual shows them at about 2700 FPS MV.

I have tryed some 180gr bullets but havent had any luck gettin em to group.

Keep us posted.
