Starting 'em young....
« on: January 08, 2005, 08:51:38 PM »
I thought I'd post these pics of my 11 month old son, Bryn, inspecting the sporterised 1941 98k Mauser I bought recently.

In the first pic you can see Bryn checking the pitting on the barrel where the rifle had been in full wood. Notice the way he keeps the end of the barrel away from him in a safe manner like all safe hunters should.

In the next he's examining the Markings on the top of the receiver that designate it's year and location of manufacture and comparing the matching numbers on the action, bolt and barrel.

And in the final he's examing the minor pitting on the bolt handle and making sure it slides well in the action. Can't have any loose old actions on our hunting rifles after all.

Gotta train em up young.

That's a good way to start em.  I started mine in a simular fashion when they were young.  I took them out to shoot and let them see what a loaded gun will do.  Safety was first and foremost from the beginning.  At that time people didn't worry too much about outlaws coming in their house and stealing their guns, we left them in the closet, under the bed or stacked against the wall.  My kids were taught to never touch a gun unless I was there to supervise.  Now they have kids, and have taught theirs the same way, we are about to have great grand kids, I hope they can grow up respecting firearms and learn to use them in a safe manner.

your son really knows his stuff, you must be proud. If we get them started young we have the best chance of  retaining them later.

Goodshot, I am proud of my little guy. But training them young in Australia is even more important than keeping young people interested in the sport shooting scene.

Here our politicians are attempting to restrict us in every possible way and the only way to ensure my son and grandchildren will be able to shoot when they are old enough is to make sure I bring them up in the knowledge that guns are tools and the responsibility lies in their hands not just to use them safely but to keep the politicans honest and prove we deserve to follow the past time that has fed & clothed our families and empowered our forebears for generations.
Politicians need to be told that just because we're in the 21st century it doesn't mean the old ways are wrong and valueless. Between politicians drumming up votes, spin doctors and the press, legal Australian shooters have copped a hiding. I won't go into specifics but everytime a police issue pistol is stolen from a station or some underworld figure shoots 3 other thugs down in the street with an unregistered handgun the licenced, long-proven members of the shooting fraternity get whacked with another threat of anti-gun legislation. And who is to blame? Those who should be preventing this with active means, not by hog-tieing the honest man. The day the government work out that their restrictions are feeding the black market will be a bright day but until that comes and politicians keep wearing their blindfolds it's only going to get worse.

But now I'll get off my soap box and sit waiting patiently for the day I can take my boy, put a rifle in his hands and show him how to respect it and use it with pride. Aint much more an father can ask more.
