Author Topic: I just orderd a .280....... (Read 715 times)

I'm new to the Handi-rifle scene (and this web site) but I have been admiring them for some time and finally decided to order one :-) . I choose the .280 because I really like that caliber and it was available with a 26" barrel. The only down side to my purchase was the fact that I couldn't get this caliber w/ a laminated stock. so, I guess what I'm asking is there any tips, tricks, ect. to do to a new Handi-rifle? I'll be reloading for this gun, probably in the 139-150gr. bullet range. I shoot alot for fun (and hunt alot also) and have come to expect 3/4"-1 1/4" groups at 100 yards with a little work, is this a reasonable expectation? Sorry for being so long winded, and thanks in advance for your help!

The stock you get will most likely be laminated anyway, just stained all brown, thats what they have been doing for a while now. You can order different laminated stocks from H&R or through Gunstocks Inc which several here have done, great looking stocks and reasonably priced, not hundreds like some companies. You accuracy expectations should be easily obtainable from the rifle if you are up to it. Great gun in a great caliber, great choice and WELCOME ABOARD!!!!

I would recommend bedding the scope rail, polishing the bore with Flitz or some similar compound, and cleaning the latch and latch recess throughly with cleaner and degreaser.

My 25-06 Handi has been all I expected and more. Despite its weight it is a great shooting rifle for the money and I plan many wilderness adventures with it for next year.

Congrats on your new rifle! Please post your results when you get to shoot it. I picked up a used Ruger M77 just before Christmas, the reason was the .280 it was chambered for. A great caliber choice for deer and distance. It's about as close as you can get to the 7mm Rem Mag without a belt on the case. I also loaded for mine 139-160gr. bullets, most with H4350, or IMR4831. I want to try RE22, but my local supplier is out right now. I haven't been to the range with it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

I can wring 1-1/4" groups out of my .280 with Factory Remington Core-lokts so ya it's definitely doable.

Sounds like I picked the right spot to ask my questions, thanks for the responses. Being new to this Handi-rifle game I'm really not sure about a few things that have been mentioned. Number 1, what is this o-ring that everyone keeps talking about installing on the fore end? Where do I get one? Correct installation method? Number 2, how much work needs to be done to a stock purched from Gun Stocks Inc.? I'm looking at the laminated factory replacement.

allcamo: Brownells has a lot of Handi Rifle stocks available on their website: www.brownells.com. Perhaps they don't require much, if any, fitting.

The o-ring is put around the barrel lug, the part that attaches the forearm to the barrel. It keeps the forearm from applying pressure to the barrel, floating it. The idea is to improve accuracy. I can't help with the stock, I've never bought one yet. I would imagine it would only require minor sanding and then finishing.

Welcome Aboard

The o-ring trick has already been discribed...so I'll tell ya what I've found so-far...on my stock and foreend from Gunstocks.Inc...it will take more than just minor sanding if you wish to have a good fit...without all the bulk as the normal Handi stocks do...the barrel channel needs to be opened up...to fit which ever barrel you have...you'll have to thin down the pistol grip area some to meet up flush to the receiver...and other than that...if you don't screw up like I did and have to use some wood filler to cover up your bo-bo's ...minor sanding after that...
