7.62x39 on Yotes?
« on: January 09, 2005, 06:30:04 PM »
:cb2: My regular varmint gun is a Savage M10 Police in .223. With 68-gr BTHP it is really a fine, accurate shooter. However, just as a fun gun, I picked up a used Ruger Mini-30. It looks like it has never been fired, and the price was too good to pass up. This is a great gun for my relatives to shoot when they come visit, because ammo is so cheap. However, I haven't had to chance to take it out and shoot it yet myself. I was just wondering how good a coyote gun this would be, and what would be the maximum range of this gun? I don't even know anyone with a 7.62x39, and I have never fired one. Just didn't feel like I needed another .223 (yet), though I could have been wrong (it happens a lot!).

You most likely got just what you paid for.  Larry

I believe most will do 3 to 4 MOA if you are lucky.

Old Griz,

While the Mini-30 is a nice fun gun without some accuracy work you'll not get what one would ever consider acceptable accuracy for coyotes unless they are very close.  I have a Mini-14 that will shoot under MOA but I invested close to what I paid for it to get it to shoot that way.  Also don't expect the 7.62x39 to be very "pelt friendly".  Lawdog

If you use the russian steel ammo it will not be as accurate.  also try to get a plastic stock, my mini 14 in .223 accuracy was improved 50%.  Also my SKS.  with plastic stock.
