.45-70: Accuracy and Loads

Got to shoot my new sweetie yesterday for second time.  Shoot 9-20, 12 rounds, of Federal 300 grainers at 100 yards.

Accuracy: Got a 6 inch group!  Not looking to drive tacks but would like to get it to 1 - 1 1/2"!  What are y'all getting.

Loads: Afraid that the light, 300 is light????, may not be the best.  What load(s) factory do y'all prefer?

I ran all the factory loads through mine and the Remington 300gr was clearly the best, with groups in the range you want. The Winchester 300 wasn't even close, but with some rifles it will be the reverse. The Rem 405 was between the two. Federal was just OK. Again, there is no way to predict which factory load a particular rifle will like.

Ain't that the truth.  With my rifle, WInchester and Federal 300's grouped around 1" at 100 yds; the Remingtons averaged around 11"!!.  My handloads for the 300's using IMR 4198 have always grouped around 1", no matter what bullet or charge I've used; same with Re7 and the Speer 400 gr FN.

I know nothing of you and please don't be insulted.  Are you sure you're not fllinching?

If not then how hard is your trigger pull?  Are you using a bench rest?  AIs it scope sighted or open sights?  Can you shoot 1 1/2" groups with other rifles set up in a like manner.  Ie, same power scope or iron sights, whichever it is.

My BC would print three shots into 3/4" using my tang sight.

Handi: No I am not insulted, and with a brand new .45-70 the flinching is something I worried about.  I feel really good about this 12 shot group with only one called flyer.   Yes I can shoot sub MOA and even 1/2 MOA groups w/ 223 and 204 caliber rifles at 100 yds fairly similarly equipped.  Which is really why I asked about the accuracy, feel it shoulb be better.  I was not getting response to changes in the scope setting like I should have, reminded me of shooting too light a bullet from my AR, not quite random but not a controlled pattern (group) on the target, and the failure to respond to scope changes is bothersome!

Flinching is a problem...I do it too...I have to conciously s q u eeeeee z e the trigger...after a half a box or so of Remmy 300's thru a 22" barrel .....its hard to not think about that big bang. I have since put in a mercury damponer and also added some pennys in with the mercury damponer, lightened the trigger pull (factory)  and also use a Past Magnum recoil pad when shooting off a bench. It all helps....and has reduced the size of my groups and my shoulder muscles no longer quiver after a box or so at the range...LOL .... :wink:

Shooting the PMC 350gr ammo from the bench is a cake walk when:

1.  Laminated stock instead of wood or synthetic is installed.

2.  Stock bolt hole filled with a lead filled pipe, ~2¼lbs, total rifle weighs ~12lbs with scope.

3.  Sims limbsaver recoil pad installed.

I thought I'd need to still shoot from a standing bench, but the felt recoil is about the same as my .308BLR, maybe less.

Forgot....I also wear a PAST magnum shoulder pad, just in case. :roll:

Went out after work:

1. Had installed the Sims Limb Saver on Sunday.  This thing is the berries, everyone w/ heavy recoil gun should have one.  With the Remington loads there is NO recoil.

2. Shot Remington 405's at 100 yds.

3. MUCH better, had one 3 shot 1" and everything in a 3 inch cluster w/ center in center of target.

4. Looking forward to the PMC's.

1 other thing you might try if your getting some pain in your face from the stock...get a elastic or neoprene Uncle Mikes shell holder for the but stock...I've use both...and put some Rubatex foam under it...this adds some extra weight to the butt stock and padding for your cheek bone...with your Simms recoil pad...if will much more pleasent to shoot with the heavy PMC stuff and others...it takes all the perceived recoil off your face when you use it...or if you want...you can use what a-lot of us trap/skeet/sporting clays guys use on our shotguns...it's a stick on pad made out of sorbathean you can get at most trap and skeet shops...

I know of two people, that had poor accuracy with 45-70. Both were with
poor scopes. One with a Ruger #1 had several scopes come apart. He now uses a Leupold and reports no further trouble. Heavy recoil will shake a cheap scope apart a lot of times. No freebees there.

My old friend and I had 4x Leupolds on 300Wby's for 25 years neither one ever had any sort of trouble. A 45-70 would be well served with one of those.

I am feeling OK, with the bad weather coming, gonna lightly do the trigger.

How much did that help by itself? I'll be picking up my Handi tomorrow and the 7/8"x5" (16oz) Mercury Recoil Reducer I ordered should be here tomorrow also.
