which bullet? 219 zipper
« on: January 10, 2005, 04:53:28 AM »
am working with a 219 zipper super 14"...basically give velocity between 222 and 223 ...ie 2750 to 2800fps with a 50gr...i am starting to work with 40gr vmaxes and also 55 gr speer...velocity for the 40gr should be around 2950fps to 3000fps and the 55gr should be around 2650 to 2700fps...which of the three would be best for coyotes under 200yds...i figure it is a toss up..not pelt hunting..just controling them...deer season is out...gotta hunt something...figured i would take my 22 pistol with me...and shoot squirels for the pot too...anyhow...
since i am still working up loads and am currently in the 40gr section....that will probably be the one..any comments...
i think the zipper will catch or outdo the 223 with heavy bullets...will hold more slow powder...just at a lower pressure...60gr should go about 2600fps...don't really know what a 223 super 14" does with them..or what it will yet...no data on a handgun...am having to start from what sierra says for the rifle and figure it out...if you have worked with one of these before in a handgun..let me know...would be curious to know your results..

Take a look at these bullets www.jamescalhoon.com. The twist rate of the barrel is what limits the bullet weights. For 60 grains you need a 1in9 or 1 in7. 1 in 14 limits you to less than 42 grains or less.

i think...if i remember correctly..that this barrel has a 1 in 12"....accuracy is best with the 45 to 55 gr...but it still should be able to shoot them in to a passable group....maybe...i don't have any at the time...don't know when i will get any...my main focus is the around 50gr group..and 55gr fmjs for plinkin....

Kirk,

PA- Joe has it right. From my experience with short barreled pistols you will do a lot better with a very light bullet. And to add to what Pa-Joe said
you can't go wrong with the Calhoon bullets, In my opinion they can't be beat, I use them in my hornet, 17rem, 204,222. 222mag,223,22-250 and think they are great, works on p-dogs yotes cats fox you name it. Give them a try i think you will like the results. Good luck Kirk and have a good day.........Joe...........

i will look at them when i have a chance...i loaded up 20 of the vmaxes last night...first powder i am trying is 4198..then 3031, 4064 and maybe 4895....i think 4198 and 3031 will probably do the best with them...but we shall see...i just wish i had more data...i have been told to stay away from 748...but varget sounds promising...would be slower and give a better case fill...probably not the highest velocity...but accuracy ought to be really good from what folks say about it....
