SBH Barrel Alignment?
« on: January 10, 2005, 09:39:20 AM »
I bought a used .44mag Super BH and noticed that when I look down the barrel through the rear sight the front sight is off to the right side a little bit and not directly atop the barrel. I looked at the front site itself and it doesn't appear to be bent or damaged in any way and the gun itself shoots well other then having to compinsate for the front site.  I'm thinking that the barrel just needs to be turned a little bit further into the receiver. My question is: Can i do it my self? and If so what's the best way?. I am by no means a gunsmith but this looks like it should be an easy fix. Is it? Thanks

You should take it to a gunsmith, or mail it to Ruger.  My vote is to send it to Ruger, unless a competent gunsmith with the right tools lives near you, and is willing to do the job cheaply.  To do it yourself, properly, you'd need to buy the tools from Brownells or Midway.

Do not clamp the barrel in a vise, stick a pipe through the open frame window, and crank it that way.  That's just a friendly warning, in case someone else suggests it.  I've seen that suggested on other forums, but this is not a good thing to do to your revolver.

I want to echo the "send it to Ruger" idea. They will take care of it.

Motion has been raised and seconded.  I third it.  Send it to Ruger.  Hot loads will cause a barrel to start working out.  Mine sheared the retaining screw on the extractor housing before the barrel movement became visible.  Ruger fixed it and sent it back in about a week.  No charge.  They will 'fix' your trigger job and spring work if you have any.  So....be beware, the gun will be gone thru fully before being returned.  All wear items will be replaced.

Well, I called Ruger and talked to a service rep, they said send it in. So now it's gone and in route to the NH location. I'll let everyone know what they say once they review it. I'm hopefull they'll just correct or replace the barrel. We'll see.

My SBH is one of the first run they made back in 94-95. The barrel unscrewed on mine . I sent it back and they replaced the bbl and ejector rod and housing. The gun is fine but they never said a word about it, just sent it back with no explaination invoice or anything zero, zip, nada!  It took six weeks to get it back. I've stated elsewhere that Ruger's service Dept doesn't live up to the quality of their guns. A blizzard of "pink slips" and some new blood that has some pride in their work would go a long way to improve the Co.
