7mm Remington Mag or .270
« on: January 10, 2005, 04:48:34 PM »
I currently own a 205 x 50 Encore and I am planning to purchase my first centerfire barrel for it.  I was leaning towards the 7mm Remington Mag from Thompson Center because I think I would prefer the 26” heavy barrel.  A friend told me that I shouldn’t buy the 7mm and get a .270 with the 24” tapered barrel.  His justification is that the 270 will be lighter to carry and I do not need that large of caliber.  He also said that the added recoil with the 7mm would “beat me up” while shooting.

I will be using this gun for White-tailed deer at under 300 yards.  My question is, would the recoil of the 7mm Remington Mag be that much more significant than the 270?  Also, is the 7mm an over-kill?  Is he right about the 270 being a better caliber for my needs?  Is there any other calibers you all would recommend?

Thanks for all your help.

I got the .270 and it shoots the federal ballistic tips like there's tomorrow.
Very easy to carry.  It shoot a 130 grain bullet at 3060 fps which is plenty big for deer or elk out to 300.

270 is more than you need. I've had a 7mm Rem Mag, several 270's and now a 270 WSM ( my favorite! ) Another great round is the 7mm-08 which I have for my Encore......

Why not have the best of both worlds and get the .280 instead?

I suppose the 7 wouldbe overkill, but there isn't such a thing as to dead, right? A .270. .280, or 7mm-08 all would be good choices. The heavy barrel does give the Encore a muzzle heavy feel.

The 270 is plenty and with Hornady's Light Magnum ammo you can just about duplicate the ballistics of the 7mm Mag.  The LM with 130 grain bullet leaves the barrel at 3215 fps.  That's actually faster than many 7mm Mag loads.

I have both the 7 Remington Mag. and the .270 Win.  The 7 mag. is heavier, and has bit more recoil.  It is accurate and it has a good scope on it.  The 7 Mag stays at home and I take the .270 Win. hunting.  When somebody in the party is pushing for bear I "might" take the 7 Mag., if I was going elk hunting I would take the 7 Mag because I have it.

I have two .270 barrels for my encore, 1 Fox Ridge 26"er in a heavy taper and a straight stock 24" barrel.  Both will do in the .5 MOA with handloads and pretty dang close to this with some factory fodder.  This season alone I have taken 4 deer and 5 hogs with this round.  All one shot kills, none moved from their tracks.  Shot placement is the key.  A couple of the hogs were shot in the neck as were two of the deer.  I shoot Hornady 130 gr. SST's over 55 grains of IMR4350 pushed to 3100fps.  This is shy of Hornady's published 3215fps for their LM's.  Lightning quick kills is what I have seen for the past 3 years.  One deer was 225lbs and 3 of the hogs went over 150.  I will trade a little energy for a round that I can put in the boiler room everytime.  Less recoil=better shooting for me!
