I've been fooling around with paints and thinners all weekend to see what would work together and I found that actone will thin out b-----g crown dip and cresting paint. And you can use polyurithan to coat the whole thing... I'm glad that I found this out because their name brand thinner costs about 17.00 when I could just go to Wal - Mart and buy it for 2.00....     Does anyone have any other money saving tips ???? I just started out in traditional archery and my wife is still ticked that I spent 400.oo on a recurve "When you have a perfectly good compound setting inthe den!" Well thats what she said...

Welcome to the club TomG and the best part is the recurve is more sporting and fun to shoot than the compound YOU WILL LIKE IT BETTER.

TomG I used to go through all that hassle of paint and thinners and such.  Now days I just get a spray can of flat white Kralon (sp) and spray the ends of my arrows.  They even have a clear spray to coat the paint when dried.  Fletchings stick just fine.  I have also gone to the warp on plastice for my crown dip.  That is real fast and easy.  Getting old and have to work smarter, not harder!

The spray paint sounds great.. what kind of glue do you use ??? ANDDDD can anyone tell me how many coats of polyurathan Ishould use on wooden arrows?? and can you use the coats of paint to match the the weight of your arrows or will it stiffen the arrow to much???

I like to use plain old wood stain in a gray coloring. I went to home depot and found a color I liked then worked the color a little darker ( using one of their stir sticks to see what it would look like ) and then used the white paint down about 6-8 inches from the nock where the fletching will go. Where the grey and white met is where I used my cresting colors usuall the same as my fletching colors. Check out  www. stickbow.com and go to there arrows section for other tips and techniques.

Tom I just use Fletch Tite glue for my 5.5 banana feathers.  Never had a problem yet.

Tom :  I use anilline dyes from woodworkers supply( woodworker.com)
use the ones that you mix with alcohol ,they dry fast and they come in about 45 colors, Been using them for over 6 yrs. with no problem .I also use Plasti-kote "odds-n-ends " for cresting you can get it at wallmart.  I have been using water base lacquer for dipping the shaft for a long time I like it better then Water based poly the only draw back it cost more then poly , but poly will work just fine . You might get a little bleeding when you dip the shafts in the poly but it dosen't seem to tint the clear. Use fine steel wool inbetween coats of poly.

I've had problems with fleth tite not working with spray enamel. Lifted the paint off. :money:  No problems with anyting else though.

I use Ducco on my fletchings and works it good. have had no problem with it, and I  buy it wal marts for $1.00 with tax.

Tomg, I use the cheap  poly paint I found at a dollar store for a qt size high gloss poly paint. They had 3 different high gloss styles, green, red and white. I found that I can best do the dipping outside so I do not drive the better half crazy. I hand the shafts on a rope line outside. I found duco seems to work on anything, as does fletching tape. I do use walkmart paint for cresting and have not ahad a problem. I made my dip tanks from old qt size soda bottle and golf club tubes...
