Switch from right to left?
« on: January 12, 2005, 01:04:54 AM »
Has anyone ever switched from shooting right handed to left handed?
The Doc told me I would be on a permenant 15# restriction on my right arm and that I wouldnt ever be able to bowhunt. I have a crossbow that I have used this season but I miss getting out in the yard and shooting bows with my son.

Hound_Dog,
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Though I have never switched my shooting, I have shot an opposite hand bow opposite handed. I'm left handed and when I was a teen and it was the first compound bow I had been around and was offered to shoot it. It was awkward but I did hit the target at about 15 yds away. I believe I could do it if I had to switch.
I'm left eye dominant as well. Many people learn to shoot opposite because of their eye dominance. Maybe someone else can tell you more.
Good Luck,
Stan

most anyone can shoot a rifle or bow off handed with a little practice IF you can close the other eye... i was born right handed with a dominate left eye and I shot both ways until i began shooting shotguns seriously.  With shotguns you can't shoot off handed because you shoot with both eyes open.  Any thing that can be aimed with one eye can be shot either way.  I don't know if this helps you or not.

I have a son that is right handed but left eye dominant.  When I bought him his last compound I told him he needed to switch over to left handed to use his strong eye.  Since he shoots with a release it was a very easy thing for him to do.  As long as you close your right eye should be no real problem with the switch.

i am a freak fo nature i think i write and throw right handed but that is it well except for eating but can eat either left or right. but it has never been a problem for me to shoot that wayas a left hand pitcher and quarterback i also was the kicker and until they saw me kick people thought i kicked left footed as well but not this guy. i am right footed kicker. i can shoot guns either rifle or pistol left or right handed but a bow i hav eto shoot right handed or i am lost. i tried shooting left handed and though i could make it happen i was definately unsure of myself. now i am one of those who has had spinal cord and spine problems for many years and hav elot my strenght in my bow arm being my left arm but am going to try a shooters pal to help me with my weak bow arm for hunting and for shooting any 3d or otherwise. you might consider that as an idea for you though you say you can only lift 15 lbs pulling weight is a bit different and could help you
in gaining some strength i would think.
you might see about getting the shooters pal and see if that will help you hold the bow and go to a lighter shooting bow lik the pearson pride or the sidewinder. they are both light bows and have exceptional low weights you can draw they both are in the 40 to 50 in the pride and a little lower at 40 lbs for the sidewinder. give them a look see and maybe the shooters pal
give me shout if i can help you at rkinney11@cox.net
thanks

I ma left eye dominant and switched from right to left a few years ago and it was easy.  Within a few weeks it was second nature.  My son is now doing the same thing and he id drilling the target after only a couple of weeks.  I suggest doing it, but start with light poundage and work up to your hunting draw weight.
